COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Several people were crushed when a driver lost control and flipped their vehicle while doing donuts in a parking lot.
The horrific crash happened Saturday night at a strip mall at the corner of South Circle and Monterey in southeast Colorado Springs.
In video circulating on social media, which 11 News has obtained but is choosing not to show, a crowd can be seen watching an SUV circle the lot while the passengers dangled out of windows.
The video shows the driver putting the SUV in reverse and begin another donut maneuver. Seconds later, while balancing on just its passenger-side tires, the SUV can be seen tipping over, then continuing to roll.
“The vehicle rolled over and onto the individuals who were hanging out the windows,” police said.
Bystanders can then be seen rushing to the vehicle and attempting to help the occupants.
Police got the 911 call just after 10:15 p.m. They found five people at the scene with life-threatening injuries. All were transported to the hospital, and there has been no update on their conditions from officials as of Monday morning. 11 News has reached out to the police department for more information.
Based on the investigation so far, police say they believe the crowd met at the strip mall specifically to do donuts in the parking lot. The alleged driver of the SUV, who did not sustain serious injuries, was arrested for reckless driving. She has been identified by CSPD as Marisol Wentling. She remained in jail as of Sunday afternoon, but records Monday morning indicate she has since bonded out.
Police say the incident remains under investigation and are asking anyone with information to call CSPD right away at 719-444-7000. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP.
