The first vehicle to actually use the phrase “sports utility vehicle” in its sales brochure, the original of all the Jeep Cherokee generations that went on sale in the ’70s was a sportier two-door variant of the body-on-frame Jeep Wagoneer, but a five-door version did appear in 1977. For the entirety of the 1984-2001 model years, the Jeep Cherokee’s XJ redesign served for an extended 18-year product lifecycle. This was partly made possible by its advanced new lightweight unibody design that would become the standard template for compact SUVs the world over in later years. Although the Cherokee name was used in various other markets, the third and fourth generations of the car would be called the Liberty in the US, but the Cherokee nameplate returned for the final generation of the SUV launched in 2013, now under FiatChrysler Automobiles, now a bit larger than before and on a Fiat-based platform.
2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee KL (5th Gen) Facelift
A mid-cycle update was applied to the 2019 model year, with changes to the Jeep Cherokee recipe including a facelift and a new optional turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 270 hp. The 2.4L base four-pot remained, now with 180 hp, while the V6 was unchanged. For its final 2023 model year, the V6 was dropped.

2014-2018 Jeep Cherokee KL (5th Gen)
The KL generations of the Jeep Cherokee kicked off with a 184-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine and a 271-hp 3.2L V6, both connected to a new ZF nine-speed automatic transmission, driving all four wheels. ​​​​​​​
