Bala Singh was a theatre artist before he began his career as an actor in Tamil films. Though he stepped foot in Malayalam in 1983, it was his Tamil debut flick Avatharam (1995) that got him the big break. Avatharam marked the directorial debut of actor Nasser.

He then went on to star in nearly 100 films in Tamil. Bala Singh was known for playing villainous roles with much aplomb. He played notable characters in Kamal Haasan's Indian, Ullaasam, Simmarasi, Dheena, Virumaandi, Saamy, Kannathil Muthamittal, Pudhupettai and many more films.

His role in Suriya-starrer NGK was much appreciated. In the film directed by Selvaraghavan, Bala Singh's character acted as a catalyst in pushing Suriya's Nandha Gopalan Kumaran ahead in his political journey.

Throughout his career, Bala Singh predominantly did Tamil films and starred in Malayalam films once in a while. His popular Malayalam films include Malamukalile Daivam, Kerala House Udan Vilpanakku and Mulla.
