Recruiting Scam via Text Message - How does it work?
I receive unsolicited text messages from people who purport to work for recruiting agencies, telling me they have jobs for me. The only way to contact them is to reply to the text. I know this to be a scam, as I'm not looking for work, have no resumés posted, and really don't share my cell phone number very much. As well, my kids are getting them.
In the most innocuous case, this is simply spam by slapdash recruiters, but I suspect this is not the case.
But, for the life of me, I can't figure out what the game is? Has anyone ever replied back, , and what happened?

I just got this text from a 213 area code. I’ve never heard of Job Source USA before nor have I applied or posted on anything yet even though I have actively been searching for potential opportunities. What’s bothering me is, how did they get my phone number and also know Im job hunting??! To my knowledge my phone number shouldn’t be connected to my Indeed account or any other similar website that I may of searched for job info on. And like I said, I’ve only searched so far, I haven’t posted anywhere or applied for any jobs.
Hi, my name is Sofia and I'm a Recruiter at "Job Source USA ". I saw on the company's job posting that you've been looking for a job recently. May I ask if you are currently still looking for a job?
I just received this exact text message from someone who supposedly works for Recruit Group which I also have not heard about before…definitely a scam:
Hi, my name is Sandra and I'm a Recruiter at Recruit Group. I saw on the company's job posting that you've been looking for a job recently. May I ask if you are currently still looking for a job?
I just got this exact same text but they said the company name was “The Hire”
Same exact text as well except the name was "Redfish Technology".... quotation marks included lol
I got the exact same one from "Redfish Technology" (quotations included)
I had no quotations but same text from Redfish. Then they wanted me to move over to WhatsApp. I did, then someone contacted me. Really unprofessional photo, which, I feel dumb, was my only tip off to the scam. 😂 I’m actively seeking a job though especially WFH positions so I wasn’t that thrown off
I got this one one from Redfish Technology a few hours ago too, but mine did NOT have any quotation marks. :'(
Got the same exact message but from MRINetwork
I just received one from "Laura" at "Diverse Staffing Company." I have a little time on my hands, so I might try to waste some of her time.
I got the same just now but Laura works for oyster recruitment company
Would love to see where this leads.
Laura is with a new company now. I just got this text in my spam folder from her:
Hello, I'm Laura from Spherion Recruitment Agency USA. Are you interested in working remotely? Can I send you more information?
Same text, different fake company! This one from "Staffers"
I go the same exact text from “Lillian” at “Recruit Group”. Looked up the group online and it exists, but text is definitely a scam
Looks like recruit group has a couple peeps! Just got this, and I am giving push back.
Hi,I'm Mary a recruiter at Recruit Group. I saw on the company's job posting that you've been looking for a job recently. May I ask if you're currently still looking for a job?
I asked how they got my number, here is the convo so far. Me: What job posting is this from? And how did you get my number? Mary: I got your contact from our recruitment database. Sorry for inconvenience caused. Mary: Alright, are you looking for part time work or full time work? Me: Ok, that is not what you said, you said from a job posting so what is it? A post or a paid data base?
No response....
I got one from Mary at Recruit Group. Wonder if they sit next to each other. /s
Got the same one, slight variation:
"Hi, Im Liza from MAU Workforce Solutions,I got your phone number from the recruiting database. We have some opportunities. Can i share some Work opening information with you ?"
I got the redfish technology one, too, and then another different one (from a clearly non-US number but first sentence said they were US based) a couple days later (yesterday) - and had never gotten anything like it before. FWIW, the first one came just 2 days after I signed in to LinkedIn and updated my profile for the first time in years. I don't recall putting in my cell # but they may have had that already? Could be a coincidence but, if I had to guess I'd say the timing is too perfect.
Btw, they probably don't know you're looking for a job. They just send it out to a thousand people and probably 50 of them are looking for a job. I just got a similar message and I'm not looking right now.
Common scammer tactic to put something that seems specific and send it to many people and they'll be right some of the time.
I just received this text from Sophia from Bulls Eye Recruiting. Hmmm. Lol I'm not answering it for sure!
Yes, I’ll put my two cents in. I just got the same text. I’m in Florida, but it was from somebody named Andy lol.
I got a Very similar message.
Hello there, I'm Sophia from ONDECK Recruitment Company US. Are you interested in a remote position/ flexible role? Can I share brief details with you?
Haha I just heard from “Sophia” at Apex Recruiting Co. I am tempted to ask her for more information, but don’t want to waste the energy on engaging with a scammer.
If you're phone number is on your resume that's how they get it any employee on indeed can look at your resume on there I know it cost to sign up as an employer on indeed but these scammers basically just trying to get your address DOB and SSN so they can try to open credit cards and other accounts in your name
They are almost all !task scams. They will often have a platform where you need to add money to gain access to tasks. You press a button to do...something. It'll look like you're earning credits, but then you'll get a task which for some unexplained reason sends your balance negative, and you have to pay more money in to continue.
They lure you with the prospect of large payouts, but you'll never be allowed to withdraw any. Think of it like a fake gambling site where it's rigged against you.
It sounds silly, but some people lose tens of thousands doing it.
Some make believe that you are a new employee in their company and send you a check to buy new equipment for your new jobs home office. You deposit that check in to your bank. This is a fake check. Checks takes 15days to clear, but your bank is gonna add (put up front) the amount to your account after 3 days while the check is still being processed. To you it looks like the check cleared after that. Then they get you to buy some office equipment from their specific "vendors" and pay them from your venmo, chash app, zelle accounts. At this point you are sending them money from your bank account. All this is done before your check has actually cleared. Then they disappear. When the bank find out the check they sent you was fake, you have already sent them your personal money and the bank will subtract the fake checks amount from your account totals. And you lost the money you send to them through zelle, cash app ect.
AutoModerator has been summoned to explain task scams. Task scams involve a website or mobile app that claims you can earn money by completing easy tasks, such as watching a video, liking a post, or creating an order. The app will tell you that you can earn money for each task, but the catch is that you can only do a limited number of tasks without upgrading your account. To upgrade your accounts, the scammers will require you to pay a fee. The goal of this scam is to get people to download the app for easy money and then encourage them to pay to get to the next level. It's impossible to get your "earnings" out of the app, so victims will have wasted their time and money. Thanks to redditor vignoniana for this script.

OH MY. I haven't gotten this far apparently. Pay to work? What a joke. (I do remember something about "tasks" on one of these text interviews)
Currently a part of one of these now. I just hit the negative balance part and refuse to proceed. They even have me in a group of other “new recruits”. Pretty convinced it’s just full of a bunch of ai bots to goad me further. But like damn, scams be getting deep these days what the actual hell 😅
Lol this is what I just got:
also just received one, same text as everyone else: “Hi,I'm Alice a Recruiter at Redfish Technology. I saw on the company's job posting that you've been looking for a job recently. May I ask if you're currently still looking for a job?”
I’m gonna pile on and say I got this exact same text right now from a 507 area code. It’s odd because just yesterday I got 2 other scam email/messages through Venmo too. I wonder what made my info a sudden target
I also go this one from a 619 area code but with a few *interesting* edits: Good day, I'm Allen from ["Redfish Technology"]. We are currently recruiting for various positions, offering a comfortable work environment, Are you looking for a Remotely?
I just got this 15 mins ago lol
Someone is making money off selling your info. One of your phone apps most likely
I just got this one.
Hello, I'm HR-assistant Matilda, from Emerald-Labs Recruitment, I am contacting you for a job offer. Can I briefly share the job details here?
Just received this too. Came here looking for answers.
Haha, I just got MATILDA a few minutes ago, she's working for a new company now!
She's got a new job already - I received one today: " Hello, I'm HR assistant MATILDA, from Wilson Group. I am contacting you for a job offer. Can I briefly share the job details here?"

Just got one
Hello, I'm HR-assistant MATILDA , from AK llc, I am contacting you for a job offer. Can I briefly share the job details here?
Matilda the HR Assistant is now recruiting for Wilson Group using a 208 (Utah) area code for a very random company that would not need my skill level. She's been blocked.
Just received this same sort of text. A Google search of the name of the place brought me to this sub, thanks y’all!
I got very similar text message from "Olivia, the recruiting assistant for Disney", to schedule me for an interview. Now, I did apply for a job at Disney recently, so it looked legit.
The text message from Olivia was preceded by a text message welcoming me to "Paradox", with attached email that uses domain name paradox.ai
So I went to that domain and it seems to be AI based "conversational recruiting software that automates the work your teams don’t have time for — taking candidates from hello to hired faster than ever"
Might be legit after all, but I refused to continue via SMS and she quickly replied to expect email on the same matter.
To be continued...
Ok, so in the end, this was legit. I had actual Disney Corp interview by following the info sent to my e-mail.
There might be some real scam recruiter messages going around but this was not it.
So if you get a message that is using paradox.ai domain name, it should be fine. Looks like some legit companies are using their service for real.
This is correct. Have had legit interviews with Disney and scheduled with Olivia. These interviews were calls where I knew the interviewer and then "she" was the one that scheduled everything, so I know for a fact that is true.
Please update. My sister got a similar recruitment text from “Disneyland” but she hadn’t applied for any jobs. I assumed it was fake and told her not to respond. I’m curious if yours is an exception.
Mine was from Jasmin. It's the same; I applied last year, so it looked legit to me, too. But I knew something was off when some basic questions were missing.
I received a message from Jasmin Awan with Disneyland. Area code 917. Asked if I wanted to send details and salary. I figured it was a scam
I just received one from Whitney (a recruitment officer) at Dice asking if she could share more information about a job. I don’t have a resume posted anywhere.
me too
Got a text from the same Whitney from Dice. Mine's got some details like "The daily salary is up to 200 dollars,The tasks can be completed in 60 minutes a day." It didn't mention they got my resume from anywhere, but clearly they're trying different things with others in this thread
I just got the exactly same message from Whitney!
I got the same message from Whitney saying “How do you feel today? I'm Whitney Allen a Recruitment Officer from Dice and we are looking for part time/full time staff and freelancers. Can I share more information with you?” I immediately started looking to see if this is a scam, and it led me here. Good to know.
Same here
Yep, same thing. Are we all in tech?
SAME but her name with Nikki LOL
I ain’t never heard of Dice before 😂😂
I just got this this morning
Hii.I'm 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐳 a virtual recruiting assistant from 𝐔n𝐢𝐭e𝐝 𝐍𝐚tio𝐧al 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥o𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. Are you still looking for 𝐅𝐓/PT 𝐑e𝐦o𝐭𝐞ly Jobs?
I mean…at least try to make it look legit and not like letters cut from a magazine?
😆 they are literally sending you a ransom note.
Talking to two of these kind of people)))) i will exhaust the shit out them becore they give up. I already have templates of the hardest questions prepared. Its fun to mess with scammers😉
I literally just got this text message and was freaking out because I thought maybe someone was trying to apply for a job in my name. Luckily I looked on here before calling and it’s just a scam.
It reads Hi, my name is Ella and I'm a Recruiter at "Recruit Group ". I saw on the company's job posting that you've been looking for a job recently. May I ask if you are currently still looking for a job?
Glad I’m not the only one with this text.
Just got an unsolicited text from Natalie (area code 236, British Columbia) with Red Recruitment Company US, for remote position/ flexible role.😐
Same here. You based out of the PNW?
Same.
I just received a similar text, also from Natalie with a 236 area code. However, this time they claimed to work for TES Staffing US.
I got the same message today. “Hi, I'm Laura from Insight Global Recruitment USA. Are you interested in a remote position?” I did a tell me more … they sent this next
“We are offering Part-time/Full-time Jobs that takes 30-60 minutes and earn an income of $70-$150 Payment is made on daily basis.
Our Requirements:
Citizens of the United States/PR
Own bank account( To Receive salary)
25 years and older.”
Next they wanted me to go to what’s app So I played along. They sent this info “1: basic salary Complete 2 sets of tasks every day for 5 consecutive days and you will receive a salary of 700 USDT Complete 2 sets of tasks every day for 14 consecutive days and you will receive a salary of 2100 USDT Complete 2 sets of tasks every day for 30 consecutive days and you will receive a salary of 5,000 USDT So one month’s salary is 7800 USDT, which is a fixed salary”
Would never say exactly what I would be doing😉. Too funny these scammers … .
Don’t reply these women are just looking for free sex
I just got one too.
Hello, I'm HR-assistant MATILDA , from AK LLC I am contacting you for a job offer. Can I briefly share the job details here?
"Hi, my name is Teresa and I'm from Search Solution Group. I got your phone number from the recruiting. We have some work opportunity for you, May i share some work opening information with you?"
"From the recruiting" - sounds like someone who learned English at The school and not the good one...doesn't inspire confidence.
The company could be spoofed as I've found an online presence for SSG.
Just got this one as well
"Hello , I'm Clara from Core Staffing .I got your phone number from the recruiting database. We have some opportunities. May i share some Work opening information with you?"
You'd think the people running these scams would at least TRY to write a professional text. And the company seems to be in NYC. I live in the Southwest.
“HI, my name is Adeline from Accurate Placement, I got your number from the recruiting , we have some work opportunity for you,May i share some Work opening information with you?”
