Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale's Batman films are also known as The Dark Knight trilogy. Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Cillian Murphy appeared in all three movies as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Alfred Pennyworth, Jim Gordon, Lucius Fox, and Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow, respectively. Batman, as a character, and the world of superhero movies as a whole, both bear the everlasting imprint of this film series.

As Batman, Bale excelled at giving a powerful performance that was emotional when needed and controlled, taking a practical outlook on why Bruce Wayne became the Caped Crusader in the first place. With all three films becoming critical and box office successes, earning over $2.4 billion worldwide combined (per The Numbers), its obvious why fans would want to know the best way to watch them.

Luckily for us, this one is easy to remember and understand because these films were released in chronological order. However, film critic Roger Ebert, said in his review of The Dark Knight that "Nolan has freed the character to be a canvas for a broader scope of human emotion. For Bruce Wayne is a deeply troubled man, let there be no doubt, and if ever in exile from his heroic role, it would not surprise me what he finds himself capable of doing," proving just how complex this set of films really is.

The origin story of how Bruce Wayne becomes Batman is told in Batman Begins. Showcasing Bruce's journey after witnessing the death of his parents and his quest to achieve justice, the film gives viewers a look into what makes Bale's Batman the man he is. Upon his return to Gotham City, Batman must tackle the unrestrained crime and corruption threatening the city, deal with law enforcement who isn't always on his side (although James Gordan is), and adjust to his feelings for his childhood friend, Rachel (Katie Holmes). What's more, he must do it all while trying to keep the city from falling into ruin, especially as Murphy's Scarecrow rises in power and Liam Neeson's Ra's al Ghul makes a play for Gotham City.

The Start of Something Truly Special

Bale's version of Batman in this film has a different kind of intensity and broody nature than the other interpretations of Batman that came before him, probably owing somewhat to Nolan's gritty style. It would provide an excellent framework for Nolan's trilogy going forward, while simultaneously influencing future depictions of The Dark Knight both on the big screen and in the comics. While it may not have been as big of a box office draw compared to the ensuing films, Batman Begins is still worth seeing for Nolan's performance, in addition to its Academy Award-nominated cinematography. Considered one of the greatest superhero films ever made by many, The Dark Knight continues Bale's Batman story by putting him in a battle of wits and skill against the greatest comic book villain ever, The Joker, who is portrayed splendidly by the late great Heath Ledger. Here, Batman must attempt to maintain order in Gotham City before it is plunged into chaos.

The Peak of The Dark Knight Trilogy

Questioning the ideas of mass pandemonium and the moral compass, The Dark Knight allows Batman to shine as a true hero of the people, with a darker edge. The realism firmly established in the previous film returns in The Dark Knight, all while introducing more of the universe's famous faces alongside Heath Ledger's Joker. Aaron Eckhart, for instance, does a terrific job as the attorney turned supervillain Harvey Dent, with some impressive practical makeup that finishes his transition into Two-Face.

Manohla Dargis of The New York Times noted that Nolan has "shifted Batman’s demons from inside his head to the outside world," which lends a different undertone to this movie. The success is obvious as the film gained a whopping 164 award nominations, taking home 162 of them, including 2 Oscars for Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor. The Dark Knight would eventually go on to be the single highest-grossing film of 2008. Stream The Dark Knight on Max

Making a rather drastic time jump, The Dark Knight Rises picks up eight long years after the events of The Dark Knight, with a beaten-down Bruce Wayne who has retired as Batman. When a masked terrorist named Bane (Tom Hardy) emerges from the shadows, Bruce must return to the life he left behind and fight for Gotham City one more time.

A story of reclaiming what was lost after tragedy has struck, this film dives deep into the emotions alongside the epic action sequences. With Alfred (Michael Caine), Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) on his side, Bruce's fight becomes something greater, as they try to save the city from being wiped out by nuclear weapons.

The Bombastic Conclusion to The Dark Knight Trilogy

Although many people hated this film, or at least liked it less than its predecessor, Bale's performance as an essentially broken Bruce Wayne struggling to overcome what being a crime-fighter has done to him, both physically and mentally, is compelling and emotionally charged. Not to mention that Tom Hardy's Bane, for better or worse, has become an iconic depiction of the character.

This all allows this trilogy to end in a way that feels right for the journey to find oneself that this version of Batman has been on. It's a self-reflective film, one that provides some closure for Batman in addition to Nolan himself, as the stature he achieved from the success of these films would allow him to further grow as a creative visionary. At the box office, The Dark Knight Rises is still the highest-grossing Batman film to date. Stream The Dark Knight Rises on Max
