King Albert II briefly fell ill at his holiday home in the south of France earlier this week.

Today, he is doing better and is continuing with his personal activities, including two upcoming 90th birthday celebrations, according to a Palace statement released in response to a report by Het Nieuwsblad.

"A doctor was called to his vacation home in the south of France, but hospitalisation was not required," relayed the Palace spokesperson. "He is doing fine now."

He is expected to return to his home country as planned in early June, in time to celebrate his milestone 90th birthday, which falls on the 6 June.

Meanwhile, Het Nieuwsblad mentioned that his daughter, Princess Astrid, had visited him. The Palace, however, clarified that this was a planned visit that had been in the pipeline for some time.

King Albert is currently vacationing with Queen Paola at 'Romarin', their holiday residence at Châteauneuf-Grasse, France.

The former monarch abdicated in 2013 to make room for his son, King Philippe.
