Although I voted Remain, it was a near run thing and I wondered how biased this film would be against the Leave side of the National Referendum. Personally I judged this to be even handed regarding political bias, although I note that other reviewers disagree with me. I welcome a drama that tries its best to portray events in a neutral light (as far as that is possible) as this approach brings us closer to the truth in my opinion.
The main revelations in this film are details about Dominic Cummings and how the Leave side marketed their campaign. I won't give too much away but was rather surprised by some of the modern marketing techniques, which clearly reveal that we are living in a scarily modern age.
I was impressed that Leavers were not dismissively portrayed as a group of bigots and the program explored the complex reasons why people chose to vote out of Europe. For example, when Cummings and others went campaigning on the doorstep (the old fashioned way) they were told by a middle-aged couple that their area had changed out of all recognition, they had no prospects of employment and that no one had knocked on their doors to solicit a vote since the 1980s. In other words, they felt ignored and irrelevant, which understandably made them angry. I have heard similar tales in real life and have come to see the referendum result as a massive protest vote.
Equally the remain side were portrayed as well-meaning, well-informed but ineffective, which is sadly accurate. They were outmanoeuvred by a skilled rival campaign and deserved to be defeated in many ways. Ultimately, they made assumptions, delivered poor advertising and (most importantly) failed to offer any incentive to stay in the EU. This was crucial at a time when many people were obviously discontent and wished for change. Offering to maintain the statue quo under these circumstances while issuing vague threats about the repercussions of leaving was not the way to persuade voters.
The scene where the Remain campaigners are running a focus group was painful to watch when the frustrated campaign leader takes in over and starts confronting people with hard questions. The consequent emotional breakdown of one member of the group co-incided with him putting other people's backs up and mirrors how many voters felt patronised and bullied and voted accordingly.
The scene were Cummings and his counterpart met and discussed the campaign shortly before the vote was excellent along with the seedy aftermath as politicians of all sides in Britain failed to deliver on their promises. It is a rare political event that leads both sides feeling betrayed and unfulfilled isn't it? The Leavers scarper rather than taking on such a difficult job while the Remainers refuse to accept the result. Both sides then conspire to deliver the worst political mess this country has ever seen that has left Britain looking very foolish internationally. All this is reflected in Cummings's lacklustre acceptance of victory and sense of betrayal at having pressed the reset button only to see politicians load the same old program.
I was highly impressed by this drama. It deserves to become compulsory viewing for students of political studies as it provides an excellent portrayal of events in 2016.
