Janet's obituary

Janet Sarno died peacefully at home in New York City on March 15, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. She was 89 years old. Ms. Sarno was born in Bridgeport, CT. She received her MFA from Yale School of Drama where she twice won the Hill Award for Excellence in Acting. She appeared on Broadway in Dylan, Equus, Knockout, The Apple Doesn’t Fall, and Fish in the Dark and had recurring roles on TV in Law & Order, All My Children, and One Life to Live. She was featured in the films Requiem for A Dream, Italian Movie, and To Dust. She spent 14 summers at Williamstown Theatre Festival. She was a prolific acting teacher, most notably at Marymount College, and she established the Limelighters Theatre Group, an acting studio for actors in their ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. A documentary about the group, titled Janet’s Class, premiered in 2010. She was also an accomplished playwright, winning a Kaufman Award for her play, Dancing on Ice, co-written with Anita Keal and performed at the New York Theatre Festival in 2021. A book of her monologues, Feisty Over Fifty, was published last month. She was known for her joie de vivre and ebullience to all that knew her. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Judge Michael J. Dontzin in 2012 and her best friend and sister Grace Camarda in 2019. She leaves behind her stepchildren Matthew S. Dontzin and Lisa Dontzin, her nephews Bryan, Bruce, Robert, and Richard Camarda, grandchildren Maegan Mishico Morris and Cole and Conor Dontzin, and great-nephews and nieces Eric, Christie, and Robby Camarda. A memorial service is planned for late spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Entertainment Community Fund in her honor.
