Marseilles, 1919. Georges Sarret is a distinguished and respected lawyer, recently honoured for his services in the First World War. He takes as his lover Philomène Schmidt, a young German woman, who has just lost her job and home. To enable Philomène to remain in France, Georges finds her a husband – who dies conveniently of natural causes a month after the wedding. Georges repeats the trick with Philomène's sister, Catherine – marrying her off to an old man who dies suddenly so that the scheming trio can profit from his life insurance. When an accomplice in the scheme, Marcel Chambon, threatens to blackmail them, Georges and his two lovers have no option but to kill him and his mistress...

"Die Deutsche Philomena (Romy Schneider) und ihre Schwester Catherine (Mascha Gonska) lassen sich in Marseille von Anwalt Georges (Michel Piccoli) zwei ältere Ehemänner vermitteln, um die französische Staatsbürgerschaft zu erhalten. Nach der Hochzeit bringen sie die gut versicherten Gatten um die Ecke. Die Schwestern verabschieden sich nach Paris, doch Philomena zieht es zurück zu Georges. Da das Geld ehedem bald aufgebraucht ist, plant das mörderische Trio eine weitere lukrative Bluttat..."
Der ist bei der Kritik über die letzten Jahrzehnte ja nicht wirklich wohlgelitten, mMn vollkommen zu unrecht. Ihm wird ja vorgeworfen, zu sprunghaft und wenig gradlinig zu sein, was mir zum einen etwas engstirnig betrachtet scheint und zum anderen, in Bezug auf die Wirkung des Films, nicht nachteilig. Sehr spaßige Betrugsgroteske, die sich aber aufgrund saftiger Leichenentsorgungsdetails nicht wirklich zum Frühstück eignet.
Es sei denn, man ist auf Diät.

Uhhh.............. Flips between feeling like a really black comedy to being a psychological thriller with characters attempting to grasp with the atrocities they just committed but then the following scene be perfectly fine. Like you have a girl puking because she is so disgusted by the fact they had just killed two people and are currently disposing their bodies in bathtubs filled with acid and then circus(?) music will start playing. I'm just so conflicted right now.

Ich sehe gerade, dass dieser Film hier ganze 316 Sichtungen zählt. Wow!
Dabei halte ich ihn für eine der besten Komödien, die das französische Kino zu bieten hat. Und es war mit "Die Ausgebufften", "Das Gespenst der Freiheit", "Das wilde Schaf" und Luis Berlangas "Grander nature" noch dazu ein extrem guter Jahrgang für bösen bis bizarren Humor aus Frankreich.
Das Traumpaar Schneider-Piccoli lässt sämtliche Hüllen der Moral, des Anstands und auch alle Kleider fallen. Es wird geheiratet für Pässe, dann für Versicherungserlöse, und wenn die Beute das nicht erfordert, werden auch mal nur so die Pistole, die Flinte oder die Säure ausgepackt und immer wird die böse Tat und jede Beisetzung ordentlich mit Champagner begossen.
Ja, sie agieren auch ein bisschen drüber, aber das ist der Zeit geschuldet und forciert zusätzlich die Darstellung der menschlichen Abgründe.
Sehr zu empfehlen ist die Blu-ray mit der neuabgetasteten Langfassung, wenn es auch nur 4 Minuten sind.

From the paroxysm of gore that springs from comedy, Girod balances like clockwork in his characters, Catherine, Philomena and Georges Sarret, that deforming game of hiding from the other what deep down one is, and culminating -each one- loving exactly what is not! She, Philomena (Romy) only escapes the pretense during the seduction, and there she doesn't give a damn about the despicable millions, but Georges (Piccoli) is never less sincere than following the aforementioned crazy romance without taking the jewels and the money, would he betray his indifference by dragging the corpses of his victims to bathe them in H2SO4? Soon we will have, breaking schemes or scruples, if and only if we feel like black humor, the fortune…

A despicable French imitation of Jim Thompson and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We lost Romy Schneider far too soon, she’s electric here. Not without its faults but nasty, funny and sexy enough that I look forward to a second viewing down the road (hopefully with better subtitles).

Uneven, pitch-black comedy set in post-WW1 Marseille with Piccoli as legal adviser teaming up with two German sisters (Schneider and Gonska), bumping off wealthy inhabitants. Piccoli is quite sinister and Schneider absolutely stunning, but film's tender moments are offset by clumsy farcical comedy and surprisingly grisly moments of horror. A very mixed bag with a wacky Morricone score.
