Biography

  • Glen Hansard born 21 April 1970 is an Irish songwriter as well as an award winning actor. But he is more known for his acoustic folk music.

Glen first tackled the musical life when he started busking at just 13. He persevered with a musical dream but entered a different secret door to international fame. He took on an acting role to play a guitarist in The Commitments which no one would realize how big it would later become. The film won a BAFTA, became a cult classic and Glen was now a widely acclaimed individual on the scene. But he was determined to follow up a musical career and so his band The Frames produced many albums.

In 2006 Glen decided it was time to set aside from The Frames and pursue a solo career: the man was progressing effortlessly in the musical world. He covered a classic Bob Dylan song 'You Ain't Going Nowhere' which was recorded for the 2007 film 'I'm Not There.' And like Dylan, Hansard took up the acoustic guitar and went down that route. However he interpreted traditional Irish routes to create a soulful cultural gorgeous acoustic sound mixed in with his soft voiced vocals, making Glen a renowned song writer and guitarist.

Now touring this year it seems Glen has had enough of the shadows and wants to step back into the spotlight.

Live reviews

  • Ever since seeing the film “Once”, I have wanted to see Glen Hansard live. In the film he seems to sing so beautifully and effortlessly, I hoped it would be the same when I saw him live at a small club in my town. The show was rather small, consisting of only two or three hundred dedicated fans. Everyone seemed to be really into singer songwriter type music and were artistic types. It was cool being around so many creative people. We all enjoyed the opening bands and were all really excited by the time Glen took the stage.

He walked across the stage and took a seat behind a keyboard and began to play under a red tinted spot light. He played some newer songs that I had not heard but were really good. Several people knew them and were singing them next to the stage.

Half way through his set he got up from the keyboard and grabbed the acoustic guitar, the same one with the hole in it made famous in once, and began to strum. He played several songs from “Once” and the crowd was sucked in. Some People swayed to the powerful lyrics and a few cried.

Glen ended the set with the song “Say it to me now”. It was one of the most powerful performances I have ever seen and a great way to finish the night. A beautiful concert.

  • Glen was on good form, delivering the final gig of his tour with no doubt as much energy and emotion as he provided for his first; here is a man who leaves everything on the pitch - or to be more accurate the stage - giving his all and reveling in the appreciation his efforts get him from an equally enthusiastic crowd.

A wide range of tracks played out in a variety of ways, culminating in a couple of excellent "unplugged" tunes, played from the circle balcony to a delighted crowd, and a beautifully rendered a cappella version of The Auld Triangle.

A strong set, enjoyed all the more by the man on stage's obvious love for what he's doing.

  • a honest and true man he is, Glen Hansard, and no pretention will harass the performance, which was great, also thanks to the cooperation of his 12 members of the band, who where willing to give him the credits but deserved them as well as he did. But outstanding was his way to silence the public by not using a microphone, and everybody was listening intense.

It is the first time in my experience that politics entered the stage: a few, mildly, remarks about the election of Trump as president where part of the show. I am sorry for all the artists, and for us as well, but, quoting Glen Hansard: we will survive that period.

    Great Concert!

  • Absolutely amazing show in an amazing venue in Berlin (Admiralspalast)!!!

We were completely fascinated by Glen and his band, each one of them are great musicians who obviously love what they're doing! They brought across a great atmosphere, lovingly & charming bunch of people! Glen made us chuckle in between explaining how and why the songs have been written. Very good storytelling.

It was the second show we vsited, the first one a couple years back in an outdoor venue which was already great. But this time the music got me excited even more, great songs, I loved the powerful trombone/trumpet/saxophone elements!

  • This was my third time seeing Glen, and he always delivers a fantastic show. He is so genuine, completely present and puts everything he has into every song. From medleys that transition into Leonard Cohen covers and back into his own song, sometimes some unamplified vocals on some tracks that really let his wonderful voice travel by its own power in smaller venues, to the concert finishes where the band travels out into the audience and plays and sings together with them -- Glen's performances are usually the concert of the year for me. I love his music, and I love hearing it and seeing him live. You would too!

  • Unbelievable 2.5 hour show! I saw him previously years ago as Swell Season and thought that was great. This concert was light years better. I was blown away at the his voice, large band, bass player, pianist and string section. Even a guest sax player from The E street band joined!

The entire concert was beautiful. From the voice, to the set. Go see him if you can! He only played 3 songs from Once but I did not care at all. Touching tribute to Gene Wilder- so classy.

The encore was the highlight with Glen solo on his guitar.

    Well done Glen!!!

  • The ultimate best way to celebrate St. Patrick’s day ☘️ In St. Paul, MN. The concert was outstanding! The 2nd time seeing him and a HUGE fan. Glen’s voice, his banter, humor and over-the-top talent will always make me come back for more. Until I’m to my last breath I will never miss his show when in Minnesota. . My dream would be to see him in Ireland. I’m disabled and in crazy pain so Glen’s concert was the only thing keeping me from losing it all winter. So Thank you Glen. Keep on doing what you do!

  • This one will stay in my memories for quite some time I think: such dynamics in his songs, from subtle to over the top! On his own, and with violins and brass players it made it complete. The crowd reacted on his songs , were quiet with the delicate ones, and enthousiastic when the band ended the songs. Participated as well in singing the songs in which Glen like no other can make you feel at ease.

His charisma is strong as well as his voice and songs and make it a -must see- concert. Every time again:-)

  • Glen and his gang brought a lot of heart into First Ave last night. They played beautifully and even included the crowd into a lot of sections. The entire band came off as a very fun group. Playing the Auld Triangle at the end, including all the band members singing a verse, was a perfect end to a perfect performance. Glen is a very friendly performer and his passion for music just oozes out through his entire set. It was a truly great evening with Glen Hansard.

  • Well what can I say - a triumph!

I took two friends brand new to Glen. Jane was on the edge of her seat the whole time. Lizzie said after an intense song: "That was what I imagine Hell sounds like" - meant in the most adorning way - pain and anguish and energy and rwwarrr.

The veil between heaven, earth and hell was thin and we were existing in some spiritual sphere that would only last as long as the beautiful concert.

I want to do it again!
