A Billionsaire is planning a return to Downton Abbey.
Paul Giamatti will reprise his role of Harold Levinson in Downton Abbey‘s new movie, Focus Features and Carnival Films announced Monday. The casting announcement coincided with an official greenlighting of the third film based on the period drama.
Giamatti, whose run on Billions ended with the series finale in October 2023, played Harold — aka Cora Grantham’s brother — in the original series.
Other new additions to the third Downton flick include Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), Alessandro Nivola (Doll & Em, The Many Saints of Newark), Simon Russell Beale (Penny Dreadful) and Arty Froushan (Carnival Row).
The returning cast includes: Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera and Douglas Reith return for the third film. Dominic West (The Affair) also will be back as Guy Dexter, a character introduced in Downton Abbey: A New Era.
In March, Downton‘s Imelda Staunton first hinted that there’d be a third film in Julian Fellowes’ franchise. She also called it the “final” cinematic installment; the release does not indicate that the movie will be the last.
Downton Abbey: A New Era was released in 2022. It followed the Crawleys and their staff as they welcomed a movie crew to Downton for the filming of a new silent film, while other members of the family embarked on a grand adventure to a villa in the south of France to uncover a mystery about the Dowager Countess.

Literally cannot wait. Loved the series, but the movies were excellent too. If this is the end I hope they give it a good ending. Although to be honest: the original series finale had a great ending. So did movie 1. So did movie 2. So I guess I have some faith that they will make it a great finale again. I will miss Maggie Smith though!
I’d bet good money Maggie will turn up for a flashback scene or two. It’s not Downton without the Dowager Countess and Julian Fellows knows it.
At some point they can’t keep pretending that World War 2 isn’t right around the corner.
Maybe this one will cover it? At least the beginning. I think the last one was set in 1928 or 1929. I think it would be interesting to see them cover it, especially since Rose married a Jewish man.
If I remember correctly, Rose and her husband moved to the U.S. and seemed to be minor characters written out of the storyline.
They are still in 1928/29. WW2 is nowhere near.
The big event that hopefully will be dealt in this movie is the ’29 Wall Street crash. Giamatti’s character (and his mom if she still lives) will lose their money, as Crawleys might too (we know how bad Robert is with finances). Everything (hopefully) will change, and not for the better.
I was wondering about the Great Depression.
And what excuse are they going to use this time for Lady Mary’s husband not being around?
And they are going to run out of excuses to bring back people who have left the core group to do other things.
It’s generally fun to revisit fun shows, but at some point, you kind of have to draw the line no?
I guess we’ll see.
Maybe the actor will actually be free this time? haha. He was amazing in “The Offer” which is why he couldn’t be in #2. I think he made the right call.
Their marriage was DOA in the second movie. I think this time they should state that he has other women and that Mary is finally free to seek out others as well. I expect them to be divorced in an eventual 4th installment.
For me, I’ve got my fingers crossed that
Mr Goode will be a part of the cast.
I loved Downton Abbey but the heart of the series is gone and I will keep that as the ending. It was beautifully done and the perfect. Anything else added will seem, to me, like a guest that has stayed too long.
I know that others may see things differently and that is as it should be. I wish the cast and crew well and hope they have success.
I absolutely can’t wait for another Downtown Abbey. Although, I wish Matthew Goode would be back in this one.
At least to me, it really felt like they gave it an ending with movie #2. The movies are difficult because it’s hard to serve the cast without a season’s worth of time. I will watch at some point I’m sure, but I hope they truly have a story worthy of continuing on past where they left things off.
I’m very excited, but what are they going to do without Ms Crawley????
Fingers crossed that Matthew Goode returns also!!!
I can’t wait. I heard so much hype about the show, but never was interested. I later got into a accident and was in the bed for 4 months and this show became my guilty pleasure. I was hooked and show after show and the the movies POOF it was gone. Bring on this one and many more, I’ll be happy!!!
