TOKYO 2020

Olympic track producing record performance

August 3, 2021 - Performance times are exceeding expectations on the world’s fastest track in Tokyo. The surface – created by Italy’s Mondo, the Olympic track supplier – incorporates three-dimensional granules of vulcanised rubber that combine shock absorption and energy return like a trampoline.

Since the first day of the athletics track and field competition, records and personal bests have tumbled, according to the New York Times.

Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica won the women’s 100 meters on Saturday night, retaining the title she won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and shattering Florence Griffith Joyner’s record set in 1988.

One day later, Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy produced an even more stunning time – 9.80 seconds – to win the men’s 100 metres, becoming the surprise winner of the race to supplant Usain Bolt as the world’s fastest man.

On Wednesday, American Sydney McLaughlin broke her own world record to win the women’s 400 metres hurdles in 51.46 seconds. A day earlier, Karsten Warholm of Norway broke the 46-second barrier and his own world record to win gold in the 400 metres hurdles.
