Okay, so I'm no Glenn Miller expert...
But here's my story... growing up, my Dad had a Glenn Miller cassette tape that featured probably about 20 songs. I loved these songs... I played them over and over... I envisioned making movies utilizing these songs in the soundtrack... these songs contain the essence of part of my childhood!
So, as an adult near 40 hitting that age of nostalgia, I suddenly got "In The Mood" (see what I did there?) for that old collection... problem was, I couldn't find THE collection I had - and every collection I could find would be inevitably missing one or two of my faves, and contain others I'd never heard of.
Then I found this set... Initially I saw the $300 price point and thought... hmmm, maybe when I'm rich...
But then I realized I could download the MP3 at $44 ... about .15 cents per song! Well, you do the math!
The layout of the discs is essentially this - Disc 1 is basically all standard classics from Miller - Disc 2-12 is filled with "all the rest" but some of the well-known tracks are sprinkled throughout these remaining discs. So, on Disc 6, for example, you'll not recognize the first 10 tracks, then suddenly hear "Pennsylvania 6-5000"... then back to obscurity. Towards the end you definitely get into more "b-side" material, so to speak. But even these tracks are, if nothing else, nice background music to whatever you're doing. For the HUUUUUGE savings, this set is every bit worth it!
The only downside is the superfluous Disc 13, which is just "alternate" recordings of the same tracks you've already heard - nothing new on it - and most of the alternates sound almost EXACTLY the same - so not sure why they felt the need to include that final disc. Even so, just download the full album and ignore that last disc - still worth the money!
My only holdout was knowing "how I am" and fearing that I would ultimately only listen to the 20 some odd songs I knew, and never listen to the rest - at which point I might as well just try to collect the individual tracks I know I like and leave it at that. But, I'm glad to say I did end up listening to all of them, and already have discovered a treasure trove of "new" old songs that I now love and cherish!
Sure, I'd love to have the physical set with the booklet and professional artwork... but, not for the extra $250! This set is an easy choice on MP3 if you are at all a fan of the man and his band.

I had collected all of the Bluebird vinyl albums but no longer have a turntable. It is great to have all of Glenn Miller's studio recordings available for listening once again in such an attractive, well-narrated package. The previously-owned collection is in excellent condition.

I can't adequately review this music as I bought it for the grandmother of a close friend - a lady who grew up during the "big-band" sounds of bands like Glenn Miller and so many others. The lady has since passed on, but she got to spend the rest of her life listening to her favorite music. As someone on a fixed income, she could not afford this collection - I was happy to buy it for her & needless to say, it made her remaining years much more enjoyable & I was happy to do it!

I wanted to buy this on LP's many years ago but didn't have the money. Then it was on CD and I didn't get it. It went out of print. I saw it on Amazon.com on CD for $511 and on MP3 for $45. I purchased the MP3 version and I love it and listen to it all the time.

So worth the money!! I'm in my early thirties and appreciate the music of that era. Love to put it on when I get home from work have a glass of wine & make dinner, Relaxing! Nice background music to have on when you have company. My husband said its the best thing he ever bought (referring to music). Great buy!

The Bluebird Studio Sessions
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 31, 2013
This edition of the complete studio sessions for Bluebird/RCA by the Glenn Miller civilian band has been arranged in chronological order with available alternate takes included as an appendix. Neither the airshots nor the Army Air Force tracks that have been issued by RCA from time to time have been included but are, of course, mostly available on other issues.
However, this is an essential set. The Miller band was a superb group and its studio sessions are, taken as a whole, wonderful performances. Arrangements were more important than solos and vocalists - but many of these are very enjoyable. Comparison with live performances show these sessions to be more polished and restrained. Some excitement has been lost but the near perfection of execution is a thing to marvel at.
All the great Miller classics, of course, are here but the real joy of this set is the large number of unfamiliar tunes and arrangements. On many occasions, a sub-standard tune is turned into a little treasure by the arrangement and performance.
The rhythm section - especially after Maurice Purtill joined the band - is first class.
The set was first issued in 1992 but, to date, remains the only available collected edition of this important body of recordings. The remastering is perfectly acceptable and the booklet very informative. This is, of course, an essential issue for all Miller collectors but will also give great pleasure to all big band enthusiasts.
