It has been a year since attending this high school and it’s fairly decent. However, the school is very old the facility just needs better improvements. One of the biggest problems I would say is that there are not enough bathrooms and with the bathrooms available they are very small with 3-1 stalls in each. Another thing is that there isn’t a softball field but there is a team which isn’t a fair or good thing. The school also does not have an orchestra room and it seems it has been that way for a long time yet, nothing has been done about it. Most trips or anything that has to do with money comes from the student's pockets. I understand that schools won’t always have enough to fund every single department but funding seems to be the only issue with that school. It’s as if we don’t get funds and if we do it doesn’t seem to show at all. I would really like to see this school flourish but it doesn't look that will happen any time soon.
The school is okay overall. I feel that the counselors are unreliable. If I need to switch my class because it doesn't suit me then I should be allowed to do that. If there is a teacher with an accent or a learning style that doesn't suit me, I should be allowed to switch to a different teacher. My school doesn't let students do these things. College Readiness isn't good at this school either. You're only going to know what to do for college if you have a class. If not then you're going to be lost. The sports funding for the school is also very disappointing. When I was on the cheer team I had to pay $1700 just to be on it, which isn't the schools' fault. But, the problem is that throughout that whole year we still had to pay more fees and we didn't even have a coach! Our coach left as soon as we all paid, and then we were given a coach who didn't even understand cheer. The attitudes on the team were horrible and he never did anything to address them. We weren't allowed to fundraise.
I think that Haines City Senior High has a great foundation to be an incredible school. However, I do think that there are several things that the school could improve on. While it is a relatively large school, with over 3,000 students, it doesn't feel like a home. Students and some staff don't always demonstrate school spirit. Ultimately, that weakens the atmosphere of the school for me and other students alike.
