There are things that I don't like about this album: the vocals sometimes take on a quivering falsetto that could rattle a person's fillings loose and a few of the songs are, well, boring.
BUT, there are attributes about this album that make this a singular listening experinece (and an enjoyable one to boot!). The utilization of electronics, effects and hard hittin' psychedelic rock make considerable contributions. The songs that do have impact, do so with sledgehammer effectiveness. And, in many ways, the songs are weird (in that really out-there awesome weird kinda way).
Faves: God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot, Adam (!!!), The Dream Tree, Guess Who I Saw in Paris, He's a Keeper of the Fire & Poppies

Wild vocals
With a vibrato that rivals my cat's purring, it can take you by surprise but the songwriting is so good it makes you stay.Published
Buffy's voice is so beautiful yet haunting. She conveys so much vulnerability and emotion with how she sings. I don't think I've heard something like this before. So happy to know that Buffy is still around to receive her flowers for this album and for her contributions as an Indigenous artist <3
My favorite songs were: Adam, The Dream Tree and Guess Who I Saw in Paris

Not what I expected at all! See, going into this I thought this would be a gentle, folky singer-songwriter record, and it kind of is, but you've also got some really trippy shit on here. Like there's one track ("Adam") that sounds like the god damn Silver Apples if you can believe that. Elsewhere, you've got strident political folk, tripped-out happenings, and the occasional dopey rock number, all delivered in this very captivating vibrato. But... most of it honestly doesn't land for me? I can respect it, certainly, but ironically enough the only song that really hits me is "Guess Who I Saw in Paris"... which is what I expected this entire album to sound like!

NME 101 Albums to Hear Before You Die #44
This album taught me that God is a foot. It also taught me that any album named 'Illuminations' is going to sound hippie as fuck. What I heard a lot when I played violin at school was that vibrato is like spice, ergo a little goes a long way. If that's true, then Buffy's voice is like a fucking habanero pepper. Nearly every note she sings is laden in that quick vibrato which, on it's own, makes her voice unique, but due to its over usage, becomes annoying and loses its impact. Still, I fuck with the spiritual moments on this (like the first and last songs) even though there are times like 'He's a Keeper of the Fire' where the album drifts into poorly-mixed and dated rock music.

groundbreaking and possibly one of the most underrated albums of all time

an album that will make you believe in magic; truly, earnestly. music that feels prophetic, aware of the future decades before it is set to arrive. the timbre of buffy's voice is haunting and ghostly and yet this album is so full of life, its psychedelic and electronic elements creating lively soundscapes that just feel like everything. perhaps more than anything, listening to this album feels like discovering a lost piece of history finally come home, finally excavated from the depths of the earth and given its due.
i haven't felt spiritual since i apologized to god for sneezing even in the comfort of my own solitude as a scared child, but experiencing this album is the closest i have ever come to worship.
