"Sands of Iwo Jima" is a solid WWII film. It definitely won't be remembered as a genre defining picture but there are far, far worse films out there than this one. Plus, with John Wayne headlining it there will always be some degree of watchability regardless of people's opinions towards his acting prowess, the guy had undeniable screen presence!

I am not sure how long it has been since I watched this movie....but it was like watching a brand new movie as I remembered almost nothing in the movie except for the final 5 minutes. In this one John Wayne plays Sgt. John M. Stryker, who is in charge of some young marines. Movie follows their training and their attack on two islands..the last being the battle of Iwo Jima.

I've got to admit that the director of this film was someone that I'd never heard of. I've since read up on Allan Dwan and he was quite the pioneer and someone I'd like to know more about. A former scriptwriter who opened his own studios in 1911, was the original founding president of the East Coast chapter of the Motion Picture Directors Association, and also the man responsible for making some of the silent era greats famous. Real sturdy Marine Corps propaganda. Wayne is remarkable in it, possibly my favorite performance I’ve seen from him yet, or maybe just my favorite character of his. Either way, loved his proto Gunny Highway schtick and unlike Heartbreak Ridge, at least they concluded this film with a real war.
Won’t lie though. As much as I try to put the time these films were made in perspective when letting the casual racism slide, Marion “John “”The Dook”” “Wayne” Cobretti referring to the Japanese soldiers as “those little lemon colored characters” was probably a prejudiced bridge too far, even for 1950.

Something you should know about my relationship with the movies is that I was absolutely obsessed with John Wayne as a kid. I watched his movies to death, with Sands of Iwo Jima being one of them that was in constant - I repeat, constant - rotation. The amount I watched this and others, it does kinda, sorta make me wonder if I should place the blame for my obsessive and anxiety-induced tendencies on John Wayne.

"Alright, saddle up!" This is Wayne's picture all the way, but there's also strong work from Forrest Tucker and John Agar, both playing a nemesis of sorts. The direction by old hand Alan Dwan is consistent and strong, with a lot of focus on the faces of these men. One scene, with Wayne and Agar stands out, where Sgt. Stryker (Wayne) refuses to allow Conway (Agar) to rescue a wounded Marine, even though they know it's not an enemy trick. The reasoning is sound, but the pain of the situation registers like a dark cloud on Wayne's visage. Throughout the picture, Wayne gets to show his chops in scenes that range from drunk and stumbling, to dejected at never getting…
As formulaic as they come despite Wayne's good work and the implementing of actual combat footage from both the Tarawa and Iwo Jima islands. These two elements alone push it past being just another bland/"turn the page already" entry in the Wayne War canon.
