We’ve been there back in February. What a great time we had there. We’re so lucky with the weather! Breathtaking views to Austria and Italy. After all we had lunch in the restaurant. Quite decent food to a fair price!

A truly stunning view 360 degree view of the landscape. We went up by cable car, though you can also travel by train up the mountain too. At the top you can view the landscape from several viewing platforms or lounge on the wooden loungers or swing chairs. There’s a cafe at the top above the cable cars and if mobility isn’t a problem there’s another at the pinnacle which is more akin to the pub. If you’re fit enough you can even hike up the mountain following the trails (apparently takes some 2-3 hours). Lovely waitress in the cafe, served us coffee and a sharing pancake platter accompanied with raisins and a pot of plum jam full of plum halves. The pancake was sprinkled with icing sugar too. It wasn’t that busy when we went, so plenty of cable cars available, but it does get packed during the summer so you might have to wait a little longer to get a car. Definitely worth the cost of 27 euros per person. The cost of upkeep of the cable car mechanisms and cars must be massive.

    A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

My fiftieth birthday treat was tackle a via ferrata / klettersteig and the Alpspitz ascent did not disappoint! Went up in the seilbahn, then tackled the climb. 4 hours / 8km / 700m ascent. We were pretty slow having never done it before, but wow! pretty hairy on the ladders going up, just as hairy on the scary on the scree slope descent. I cannot recommend this enough.

We had bought the via ferrata kit in advance (maybe you can hire in Garmisch?)

The best approach to the highest peak of Germany is from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, although its also possible to get there from Austria. On the way up, consider to spend one night in a cottage where you can enjoy great food and views.

Beautiful small mountain lake that has a magnificent view of Zugspitze. It only takes 20 through 30 minutes to walk around the lake and if you are brave, you can go swimming in it. The mountain air is refreshing and was a nice evening stop.

This is a short taxi ride from the train station in Garmisch, about eur12 for 4 of us. It's really interesting to see and a lovely restaurant at the bottom of the jumps.
But the best thing is the ski lift up beside it which brings you up to the most gorgeous place. It was thick snow up there for us but you could follow tracks to the restaurant (closed) and viewing area which is breathtaking.
    Well worth the ride up.

This street is the old town center for Partenkirchen. There are lots of beautifully painted buildings, restaurants, and souvenir shops here. It is well worth an afternoon or a couple of evenings for dinner.

We did this hike in the pouring rain which meant that there was no view but it was still worth it. We were short on time and really wanted to an alpine hike. It is a steep climb but beautiful scenery, even got to see an Alpine Salamander. The only big downside was the unfriendly hosts at the beer garden. They wouldn't allow us to sit under cover on their veranda and eat our own picnic. Their veranda is the only under cover spot at the top so was frustrating in the rain. Other than that it was a worthwhile trip.

Town church in atypical Baroque style. Very few tourists, so it was easy to take time to look around. Free entry and interesting details to be seen. Easily accessible when in town.

Beautiful breathtaking views from the mountain top! The lake below was clear blue, cold and swimmable. We found the accommodations welcoming.
