      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Hugh Grant ably snatches up the bouquet of leading man status with Four Weddings and a Funeral, a sparkling romantic comedy given real charm by its chummy ensemble and Richard Curtis' sharp-witted screenplay.

Nigel Andrews Financial Times The script by Blackadder’s Richard Curtis and direction by Mike Newell give this comical romantic froth such an eager whisk that it stands up and assaults the taste buds. Feb 29, 2024 Full Review John Petrakis Chicago Tribune It is smart and ironic, perceptive and observant, witty and poignant, moving and sad, all at the same time. This is more than an accomplishment for a romantic comedy. This is a small miracle. Rated: 3.5/4 Feb 29, 2024 Full Review Derek Malcolm Guardian Newell, a director like Stephen Frears who has no particular style but fits his undoubted expertise to the material, has to be congratulated not only for getting such good performances but for the pace and verve with which he lays out the absurdities. Feb 29, 2024 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Mike Newell, director of Enchanted April, has made an even more charming movie. Richard Curtis' screenplay shuffles at least 20 characters, all outlined with strict economy. [Full review in Spanish] Feb 29, 2024 Full Review John Griffin Montreal Gazette Like the best champagne, Four Weddings and a Funeral goes to the head quickly. And like the best champagne, it leaves fizzy memories and almost no hangover. Rated: 4/5 Feb 29, 2024 Full Review John Millar Daily Record (UK) This is a glorious, entertaining, fast-moving, hilarious comedy, packed with great jokes, scattered like confetti and delivered by a cast who act their socks off. Gertrude F A charming, clever, comedy with a wonderful cast and the best opening sequence. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Alec B There are some great moments and Grant is effortlessly charming, but the movie is much flimsier than people remember (so many great actresses wasted playing non-characters, some really grating dialogue, and an ending that feels a little unearned) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Hayley M An entertaining film that can be relatable! Hugh grant character is a floppy bunny who needs to grow a spine!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Holly Best Rom com of all time.. there is nothing wrong with this film .. best cast, best writing, so funny and so heart wrenching! Must have watched it 100000 times and loved every minute! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/23 Full Review Austin P An all-time favorite for me. Outstanding film in every way. Where do I start? The screenplay is exquisite. Richard Curtis is my most favorite flick writer and this one could not be better. Director Mike Newell pairs with Curtis as they seem to understand life. Like a painting brushed by the best, a movie that has no misplaced words. Many significant scenes in this one are totally based on the dialogue, you care less about where the setting is. Mike Newell does a masterful job in setting up his camera to allow the actors to look great in the set pieces. Michael Coulter, a top line British cinematographer, has made a very "British" looking film, beautiful in every way. Andie McDowell some say cannot act. Bull shit. She is wonderful here with Hugh Grant, and their scenes together are some of the best work by each in their career. John Hannah and others are top-notch in their supporting roles. I loved this movie from the first time and always come back every few years to get my perspective with regard to love, marriage, choices, and death. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/02/23 Full Review Madie R The beginning of the Richard Curtis-Huh Grant rom-com relationship. "Four Weddings and a Funeral" delves into themes of commitment, responsibility, and unrequited love, but in a charming, light-hearted way. Marriage can be a wonderful thing...IF you love the person with all your heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
