Westfield Senior High School Reviews
Rating 3.81 out of 5 277 reviews
There are many good and bad things about WHS. Let's start with the bad shall we? First, food. The food selection is incredibly limited and constantly on rotation. There are a couple of problems with this. One, those who wish to eat heathy cannot due to the lack of selection. Two, the healthy options are inherently unhealthy (deli meats or salad with FRIED chicken and SAUCE). Three, the students' favorite foods (the chicken ciabatta) are only served on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Four, it is incredibly expensive, especially for low-income students like myself. Second, the community at WHS. There have been many reports of swastikas being drawn in bathrooms and overall racist behavior going on in the school. Even after school intervention, nothing changed and the school could not contain or solve the issue. Considering the character limit, let's move onto the positives. First, cleanliness. It is generally decently clean for a high school. Second, the teachers care about their students.
Westfield Senior High School is a fantastic school, and it's a real honor to attend. Academics and college preparation are taken very seriously however I wish there could be more. As a minority, there are times when I feel behind the wave of the rest of the students. Although this school, over the past few years, has been aiming towards a more inclusive environment, it should be noted that they could do more for their minority students. When it comes to their athletics, Westfield has very successful programs. Their coaches are dedicated, and the proper training equipment is provided. The school facilities are a little outdated, and sometimes out of order. But, overall, we have a clean and bright environment we can attend.
I battle with how I feel about my high school experience, but I'll start with the reasons why I enjoyed it. The education I received was undoubtedly excellent. Especially in comparison to my peers at my college, I feel like I was well-prepared for higher education and for life in general. Additionally, there were so many activities to be a part of, many of which that I joined. There was so much variety, and although there was a strong emphasis on sports, there were so many other types of activities that were successful and/or highly involved. However, there is so much that my high school lacked. First and foremost, diversity. My high school is mostly white which already ostracizes many racial minorities, but also has a great impact on safety. There have been so many instances of swastikas being drawn in bathrooms as well as hearing slurs being said in the hallways. Many of my peers did not feel welcome or safe in my high school. Westfield needs to work on diversity and inclusion.
