AVONDALE

Titles using Avondale were Earl of Avondale and Lord Avondale. The latter title was also found as Lord Avandale. It was based on land around River Avon in Scotland which rises in the hills on the boundary between East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire. Avondale occurs in several titles at different dates.

Earl of Avondale
When 'Avondale' was first used it was for James Douglas in 1437, and James Douglas had the status as an earl, so he became Earl of Avondale. The titlewas forfeit in 1455 on the attainder of his son James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas and 3rd Earl of Avondale.

Lord Avondale (first creation)
This title was used in 1459 for Andrew Stuart or Stewart, son of Walter Stewart, Master of Fife, and grandson of Murdoch 2nd Duke of Albany. Andrew was Chancellor of Scotland for a period after 1460 and died in 1488. The title became extinct.

Lord Avondale (second creation)
This title was used for another Andrew Stuart or Stewart, who was created Lord Avondale in about 1499. He was a great-grandson of Sir Walter Stewart, and thus a (some say half-) great-nephew of the first Lord Avondale.
He died of the battlefield of Flodden, 9 September 1513.
This Andrew's son exchanged the title of Lord Avondale for that of Lord Ochiltree on 15 March 1543.

The most recent creation, in 1890, was for Prince Albert son of the later King Edward VII. He was entitled Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale. The title became extinct on his death in 1892. 3

Andrew had a relationship with someone.
