Subaru Recalls Nearly 119,000 for Malfunctioning Airbags

Subaru has issued a recall for 118,723 Legacy sedans and Outback SUVs from model years 2020 through 2022 because their front passenger airbags might not deploy in a crash.

Modern cars have a sensor that detects whether the front passenger seat is occupied, and turns the airbag on only if needed. Subaru tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the sensors in these cars may include a circuit board that can crack, leaving them vulnerable to a short circuit.

“If the short circuit occurs, the SRS airbag system warning lamp will illuminate, front passenger’s frontal airbag OFF indicator will illuminate, and the front passenger airbag may not deploy in certain crashes as designed, increasing the risk of injury to an occupant in the seat,” the company explains.

The company says it knows of no injuries, but at least 253 warranty claims, related to the problem.

Dealers will replace the sensors to fix the problem. Recall repairs are always free.
