Canada's motto. Mottoes, originally battle cries, are used in many aspects of life. Aspiration, defiance, existential declaration: all are reflected. Many are pious; others, if not impious, are impish: ‘Remember the Alamo’, ‘Fifty-four forty or fight’, ‘Vive le Québec libre’, ‘Six into twenty will not go’ (Ulster Unionist). If armorial, they are often in unchanging Latin. Other languages occur: ‘Ich dien’ (‘I serve’) of the Prince of Wales; ‘Fiel pero desdichado’ (‘Faithful, though unfortunate’), ... ...
