Top-seeded Rangers knock off Fort Lewis in RMAC semis, advance to Sunday's final

DENVER, Colo. — After an undefeated run to the RMAC regular season title, the No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team started its postseason march in fine fashion on Friday as it rolled to a 20-4 victory against Fort Lewis College in the RMAC Tournament semi-finals.

With the win, the top-seeded Rangers (18-0 overall) will square off against No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa University (13-5 overall) for the third straight season in the RMAC Tournament championship game, set for noon on Sunday at the Regis Turf Field.

"I thought there was tremendous team effort, end to end, and definitely a playoff atmosphere," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "Fort Lewis is athletic and capable, so we really wanted to control the tempo the entire game. We focused on winning the 50-50 balls, won draw controls and to not play complacent. We wanted to play a complete game focused on us and playing Regis lacrosse. And I think we executed that all over the field."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers left little drama as they stormed out to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and never let the visiting Skyhawks (5-12 overall) ever creep back any closer than six goals the rest of the way.

Regis finished with a 32-8 advantage in shots, 25-8 in shots on goal, while winning the key battles Kellner stressed to the team in draw controls (19-6) and ground balls (21-15).

Offensively, the Rangers had four different players record three goals on Friday in graduate students Hannah Krats and Kyleigh Peoples, sophomore Lily Ferguson and senior Alexis Parker.

Peoples would also add one assist to give her a team-high four points and move her into sole possession of first place as the Regis career assist leader (127), passing her former teammate Sarah Myres.

"Kyleigh has tremendous field vision and I think she sees the field better than anybody, which is why she's won multiple RMAC Attacker of the Year awards," Kellner said. "She can see the lanes and gaps. She's also a very strong finisher, so she attracts so much attention, defensively, that is opens up her teammates. She is a selfless player and distributes the ball when necessary. We talk as a team every day about doing what's best for the ball on offense and she exudes that."

Junior midfielder Bailey Truex was the fifth Ranger with a multi-goal game as she added two scores and an assist, while six Regis players — Lucy Johnson, Meg Hanson, Justine Spahr, Tara Davis, Tia Krats and Sarah Kate Dhom — netted one goal apiece.

The goal for Dhom, the 2022 RMAC Defender of the Year, was her first goal of the season and fourth goals of her career.

"Sarah Kate received that tremendous honor, which she absolutely deserved, of being the RMAC Defender of the Year. But she has a wonderful stick and could really play on either end," Kellner said of Dhom. "Just for our team, we use her more on the defensive side."

Rounding out the Regis top performers Friday were junior attacker Gabby Rothermund with a game-high four assists. Truex led all Rangers with six draw controls, while the duo of Peoples (5 ground balls, 5 caused turnovers) and Dhom (4 ground balls, 4 caused turnovers) capped their evenings with strong performances on the defensive end.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch received the start and earned the win as she stopped three of the six shots she faced. Sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte played the final 30 minutes, making one save.

UP NEXT: Regis will hunt its fifth RMAC Tournament championship in program history on Sunday when it squares off against No. 2 seed, Colorado Mesa.

The Mavericks earned an 18-11 win over No. 3 seed University of Colorado-Colorado Springs during the first semi-final game Friday.

NOTES: Prior to the game, Regis was awarded its championship banner for the 2022 regular season. Additionally, the Rangers had three players receive their individual awards from the conference in Kyleigh Peoples (Attacker of the Year), Sarah Kate Dhom (Defender of the Year) and Lucy Johnson (Summit Award). Coach Kellner was also presented with her fifth career RMAC Coach of the Year award.

"Recognizing our award winners and our team for what they accomplished during the regular season was a lot of fun pregame. And I'm excited for our next opportunity," Kellner said. "We played Colorado Mesa a week ago in a tough battle. They are a team that is hungry and really capable, so we'll rest and recover and show up ready to play on Sunday."
