Alan Douglas. Wow! Am I conflicted about this guy. His jazz career as a producer is almost as controversial as his production credits after Hendrix's death. So faced with the fact that I originally thought this guy was a ghoul feeding on the last vestiges of Jimi's genius, I shunned most of his output related to Hendrix's unfinished recordings.
So decades have passed and the Earth has cooled considerably. Just like Mother Earth, I also have cooled considerably. So after more than a quarter century, I chose to obtain a copy of "Voodoo Soup". I found a like-new used cd and pulled the trigger. Thank you Alan Douglas. This offering is a true pleasure.
In my early adult years, I did more than just sniff disdainfully at the dish water that I thought was Voodoo Soup. As a firmly ensconced senior citizen, I find nearly limitless joy at the incredibly rich gumbo that is Voodoo Soup.
So if the scales have fallen from my eyes, then why the waffling on a Five Star review? In my opinion, Douglas applied a bit too much "craft" to the "artistic" diamonds in the rough that Jimi left unpolished. Alan was a bit too sure that his vision for producing gems from rough-cut stones was The Way. It seems at times to make the music too much of an Alan Douglas production, rather than fashioning them in the form that the composer intended.
What an ass I am! I expect A.D. to be not only Sisyphus, but he also has to be a psychic Sysyphus. He must read the mind of a dead man and follow his instructions from beyond the grave. No posthumously produced work of art is going to be exactly as the creator intended. Douglas did not always hit his targets with such near-perfection as exhibited herein. Even so, with Voodoo Soup he scores above 4.5, but less than 4.8.
That is one old man's take on this item. Please, get a copy for yourself and crank it through some great period loudspeakers. Next, ride around in your Aeromobile with the Coupe de Ville engine and the super-class auto sound system with the butt-massaging bass shakers set at 9.0 on the Richter Scale. Then, slip into your at-home recliner and put this cd through some decent noise-cancelling headphones (not wimpy ear buds). While at home in your easy chair, add to the sensory experience with any legal intoxicant (your local laws may vary) and you too can turn back the hands of time. As a tee-totaller myself, I still find this recording to be hippie-esque in a very good way.
Final note: I am still not a major fan of the cover art. It could be so much worse than it is. Yet, it does absolutely nothing negatively to the music contained within. Let each listener be his own critic. Enjoy!

I'm getting a little tired of all the people who are buying into the Hendricks' family's negative propaganda concerning Alan Douglas. This album is simply much, much better than First Rays of the New Rising Sun. The two albums are different visions of what Jimi was going to do next. First Rays is a simple, unadorned album which reminds me of McCartney and Plastic Ono Band, which were recorded around the same time period. The focus with First Rays is mainly on the compositions. But in terms of the production, it's boring and linear. First Rays contains the best version of "Hey Baby" that I've heard, and "In From the Storm" is very strong, but there are many tracks that still sound like demos to me. Douglas and his group at MCA did a tremendous job of re-imagining what Jimi's music would sound like today. "Voodoo Soup" is more of a logical successor to "Electric Ladyland" than "First Rays". I just love this "Voodoo Soup" album. "Blues" was also very well done by Douglas. As a matter of fact, I'm so impressed with this, that I've managed to track down CD versions of "Crash Landing" and "Midnight Lightning" by Douglas, and I plan to listen to those albums also. He was a good producer. He had the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff, and plug in sonic gaps when the music just didn't sound very good. Did he make some mistakes? Perhaps. But so did JImi. If Hendrix were alive today, he would be the first to criticize his own work. He was a perfectionist, always trying to improve, never satisfied. So whatever you do, DON'T listen to the haters who tell you that Alan Douglas was a worthless hack who ruined Jimi's music. It's just not true. Alan loved Jimi's music, and only wanted to make it better. And, I believe that in some ways, he did.

When this came out, I shied away because of dismissive reviews. Dumb. I've studied Jimi for 36 years and this is an excellent album. All of the songs are new mixes, some capturing excellent points and feel. For me, it's far superior to First Rays... While I prefer some of the mixes better on that album, this overall is much closer to a Jimi album in spirit. The opening is something that I hadn't heard yet, and even the mixes I don't prefer are interesting. The only session musician work is drums on two songs, and it was a wise choice. Very well done.

I prefer Voodoo Soup to First Rays. Why? Because it has excellent production and is presented as a completed album. Alan Douglas did a fantastic job. I couldn't give two sh*ts if Voodoo Soup had overdubs by people who never worked with Jimi. The album feels much closer to what Jimi would've envisioned. The choice of the opening track "The New Rising Sun" was an excellent decision. And it closes with In From The Storm - marvelous choice.
The only problem with Voodoo Soup is the use of 3 instrumentals - Midnight, Pali Gap and Peace In Mississippi. Well... maybe not problem. I can't find the right words. I love all 3 instrumentals. But if I was compiling Voodoo Soup, I would've replaced Midnight with Izabella, which Jimi intended for his next album. Izabella is a powerful song and should've been on Voodoo Soup.
First Rays is a weak album. Voodoo Soup has better mixes of the songs. First Rays drags on for too long and becomes a chore to listen to IMO. The only reason to get First Rays would be to get Izabella and Dolly Dagger (which were left off of Voodoo Soup and which Jimi would most likely have used on his (4th?) album had he lived to complete it).
The Hendrix family is greedy as hell!! I hate the Hendrix family. They're just cashing in on Jimi. On amazon, you'll see a lot of people writing "authorised by the Hendrix family". What does that even mean? It's authorised because the Hendrix family approved it? The word has no mean. Well, Voodoo Soup is authorised by Alan Douglas. The point is just because Hendrix's greedy family approved it, doesn't mean First Rays is any good. It isn't.

Though many of the songs on this CD are on FIRST RAYS OF THE NEW RISING SUN there is enough of a difference in the versions to merit buying VOODOO SOUP.There are also several songs that are not on FIRST RAYS[Midnight,Pali Gap,Message Of Love, and Peace In Mississippi].Then of course, there is the lovely cover art by MOBIUS.All in all a great purchase for any JIMI fan boy.

Not just for the completist - but lovers of music

Excellent remixes. You'll probably want to re-order the tracks and replace their correspondents on the 'New Rising Sun' album. Makes me wish the Douglas production 'Crash Landing' was still easily available - as well as the stirring 'Trashman' which opened the otherwise dull Douglas mess that was called, if I recall 'Midnight Lightning'. Clearly that was an early attempt at rebuilding lost Hendrix tapes. Voodoo Soup shows what can be done with material that never found its definitive expression. Don't we just miss Jimi more and more as the years pass not so gently away...?
