Zipair Review

I'd love to hear reviews from anyone who has used Zipair to travel from California to Japan. I am considering that airline for a trip for me & my family (2 adults and 2 kids, ages 6 & 8) in May, and it seems like a good deal, but I'm worried about exactly what I would be giving up by flying this cheaper flight! Thank you!

ZipAir is a relatively new contender trying to enter / succeed the low cost long-haul market. It is a subsidiary of JAL and leases their aircraft (currently 4 B787).

If you consider booking with them, please consider all extras (hand-luggage, luggage, food, water, etc.) and then compare with other airlines and understand their luggage rules and check out the entertainment system options (no screen in the seats).

Also check out the fare conditions. Most tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable.

Now, having a travel insurance is always a good idea, but if you buy non-changeable and non-refundable tickets it is becoming even more important.

Expect to pay extra for baggage, food, and water or bring your own. There are no screens available, you’ll have to use your own but there is free, slow wifi. You’re not allowed move from your seat regardless of seat availability. Empty rows are taped off to prevent passengers from changing to more comfortable seats. However, it is a direct flight.

Very, very no thrills, but at least they don't charge to use the toilet, just yet!

I flew ZipAir back in July 2022 for LAX - NRT - BKK. I had nothing but good experience with them. The flights departed and arrived on time. I'll fly with them again in June for NRT - BKK.

>>>Very, very no thrills,!<<<

That's good, because I really don't want thrills while I'm flying. 😉

Hello. I will not book Zipair again due to their non-refundable flight policy. My daughter and I booked round-trip flights to Tokyo from Los Angeles. My daughter has Stage 4 breast cancer and her pain levels had increased intensely suddenly, so we had to cancel our trip. Zipair has no customer service phone number. We sent them a message of inquiry from their website requesting a cancellation and refund. They never responded. So I cancelled online and learned that they will only refund the airport fees ($195). They don't allow you to even change your flight at all to another date even if you are willing to pay a re-booking/change fee. They will not allow you the option of giving you credit toward a future flight! They not only kept the entire flight fees of over $2700, but retained the charges for the meal and snacks we ordered that we obviously will not be eating! Once you book your flights, you'd better be 100% certain you will be traveling or be prepared to forfeit your flight and meal fee charges. There appears to be zero recourse. I think that even if you or your travel companion died prior to the flight, they would still keep the fees!

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I know that's a difficult thing to deal with.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is the case with many airlines. Some of the fares that are offered are not only non-refundable, but non-changeable. So you have to check carefully what your needs might be. Often the cheapest tickets are the most restrictive.

I think the lacking customer service would definitely be an issue for me too. It's unfortunate that they didn't seem to respond in a timely way to your inquireies.

So sorry about your daughter.

"We sent them a message of inquiry from their website requesting a cancellation and refund. "

In this day and age sometimes a non refundable rate is not refundable even if you have a very good reason.

"Once you book your flights, you'd better be 100% certain you will be traveling or be prepared to forfeit your flight"

This is very good advice. Better advice is to try to recover this money on your travel insurance. This is what travel insurance is for. If you do not have travel insurance it would be a good idea to get it (if possible). In these times it has become more necessary.

Though I think had you booked direct with the airline you might have been able to get something back over the taxers.

I too am very sorry to hear about your daughters illness Hawaii5flo .

I also hope that you had travel insurance in place but as I am sure you are only too aware, the problem with most travel insurance policies is often that they generally specifically exclude anything connected to expenses arising because of pre-existing conditions in either the traveller or close relatives resulting in cancelling travel plans . There ARE a few specialist suppliers out there who will cover issues connected to pre-existing conditions, but they are very pricy and you need to read the T&Cs and exclusions very carefully. My guess is that no insurance would cover this particular reason for cancelling and as you discovered, some airlines do not make it easy to contact them in person.

Who knows whether had you been able to speak to a human being you might have been given special consideration and been allowed to reschedule what was from the get-go sold as a non-refundable fare ,but that didn't happen so you are stuck with being dealt with strictly according to the published rules of the ticket you paid for. I am just sorry that it cost you so much money
