I knew if I looked hard enough I'd find some more hidden gems on Amazon Prime and my latest discovery is She'll Be Wearing Pink Pyjamas, a heartwarming comedy about eight British women from different walks of life, all of whom sign up for a "vacation" in the form of a mountain-climbing survival course in the English countryside. In a brisk 86 minutes, we get to know these colorful characters, including loudly opinionated Fran (Julie Walters); cheery self-described spinster Lucy (Janet Henfrey); Doreen (Paula Jacobs), who worries that her weight gets in the way of completing tasks; Anita (Alyson Spiro), who wonders whether the time has come to leave her unsatisfying marriage and reclaim her life; and Jude (Jane Wood,…
This used to regularly appear on Channel 4 in the 80s, being one of its first Film 4 features. I well remember watching it a couple of times with my parents; clearly as liberal pair who didn't bat much of an eyelid to their pre-teen son being exposed to nudity and depictions and talk of sex; though I do remember asking them what a 'period' was after hearing one character say they'd just got theirs - a moment in my life I'd completely forgotten about until rewatching this.
She'll Be Wearing Pink Pyjamas is a small scale, homegrown piece of feminist cinema and ostensibly an ensemble piece concerning a disparate group of women (ages ranging from 30s to 50s) participating…
A touching and positive film about female solidarity, She'll Be Wearing Pink Pyjamas tells the story of a disparate group of women who come together for a week-long outward bound course in the Lake District.
Look, I know I want the moon on a stick. I know that this is a film written by Eva Hardy (based on her own experiences on a similar survivalist course), produced by one woman, Tara Prem, and populated by a great female ensemble; indeed, there is only really one man with any meaningful role in the whole film, and that's Anthony Higgins, who plays one of the instructors. I know all this and I know that this film is from 1984, a time when…
Watched it on CHN 4 @ 22.00
The 3rd time I watched this film, don't no why but I really like it for some reason back in the late 80's early 90's, just a good film.
Unremarkable group camaraderie comedy with a less strident feminist message than first might be deduced and much less stage-bound than the similar (sister?) film of Steaming made around this time. Walters as so often carries things with a chirpy confidence but as a whole it leads exactly where you expect it to.
I liked Maureen O’Brien getting the first line. And I forgot she had red hair too, so that’s nice for me. Julie Walters’ hair was also very interesting. Hard to believe Janet Henrey survived filming on that mountain, let alone to this day. That woman’s been old forever, and long may she continue to be!
Julie Walters stars in this quite strange film were literally nothing really happens.
Bunch of women go on an eighties version of a "team bonding" session and get to know each other along the way.
