One of those places that you have to see in your life. The ruins are huge, take up a big area. And one can imagine the incredible events that were once held here. Expect to see huge crowds all around you.

Built by the Roman emperors Agrippa and Hadrian around 2000 years ago, it’s incredible that the Pantheon has survived intact for so long. It’s beaten barbarian invaders, wars, fire, looting and the elements. You can’t help but be struck by a sense of awe.
Having been inside before, we were put off by the very long queues that snaked across the piazza and we didn’t want to wait in the sun so we didn’t go inside this time. That was probably a mistake. The dome is quite amazing - the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The record still stands. Never been beaten. To pull off this incredible engineering feat, they built the flower walls out of heavy stone, then as they built upwards, they made the concrete thinner and added pumice so that it was quite lightweight.
Sunlight streams through the ‘eye’ of the dome. It looks small but it’s actually 8.2m across. I’d recommend going inside and in hindsight, I’m sorry that we didn’t bite the bullet and join the queue.
If you have the chance to walk past the Pantheon at night, do it. The facade is beautifully illuminated and it just looks magical.

The cathedral is a huge, and hugely impressive, building, both inside and out. There are helpful guides who can tell you about its construction. I recommend paying a bit extra to take the tour of the roof; you can ascend by stairs or by a lift. the views are amazing and it's fascinating (and vertigo-inducing) to see the spires etc from high up. We visited on a weekday when it is likely to be far less busy (shorter queues).

Trevi's magic lives up to the hype! Breathtaking sculptures cascade down, water shimmering. Crowded, but worth braving for a photo (and coin toss for luck!).

It is impossible to take it all in within a single visit, there is so much going on and there is so much history and context that a guide is a must to get a good experience.

The history an grandeur cannot be put down in words, and your first visit will be the best one - just walking through the doors.

Better to go outside usual busy periods, and ideally with a skip the lines ticket.
