There are still a few more episodes of the second installment of The Spanish Princess, but fans of the Starz period drama are already wondering what's next for the on-screen Tudors. Here's everything we know about the future of the Starz royal universe.

Will there be a season 3 of The Spanish Princess?

Back when the 8-episode extension of The Spanish Princess was first announced in 2019, showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham made it clear that the second season would be the conclusion of the story of the titular Catherine of Aragon.

"I hope that we have managed to provide a journey that's still full of many surprises," Graham said. "And the ending, I don't think, although it ends in a place that history will know, and people who know their history will know, I think it ends in a place that will still surprise dramatically."

Covering her tempestuous marriage to King Henry VIII, following the death of her first husband, Henry's brother Arthur, Catherine's tale in The Spanish Princess may be done, but that doesn't necessarily mean that period drama lovers will be bereft.

The Spanish Princess is itself a spinoff of two previous Starz miniseries, The White Queen and The White Princess—all three of them based on the books of historical fiction author Philippa Gregory. Given that Gregory has written 15 novels in her Plantagenet and Tudor series, there's certainly plenty of material to draw from if the creators should choose to carry on the trend and create a new limited series as a follow-up.

While we don't yet have confirmation if there will be future shows in Starz's Gregory universe, the books do offer plenty of possibilities. Given that The Spanish Princess has already introduced Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII's sisters Margaret and Mary, an adaptation of Gregory's Three Sisters, Three Queens, which focuses on those three women, could be a possibility.

Another obvious option would be a new version of Gregory's best-known novel, The Other Boleyn Girl, which covers the relationship between Henry VIII, his second wife Anne Boleyn, and her sister Mary. However, the fact that the novel was also adapted into a 2008 film of the same name starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson could be a deterrent if the network wants to avoid confusion. This period was also a primary focus of the successful Showtime drama The Tudors, which might in turn inspire the creators to look to lesser known histories.

Among her other books, Gregory's bibliography includes stories featuring Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII's fourth wife, as well as his final wife, Katherine Parr, either of which could make for an interesting look into a period of Tudor life less often seen in adaptations. Or the network could simply choose to skip ahead a royal generation to one of Gregory's books centered on Queen Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, or the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, better known as the "Nine Days Queen."

Of course, for now, it's all speculation—period drama lovers will just have to cross our fingers and hope that the creators of The Spanish Princess have more in store for us.
