DERBY – Members of former Mayor Rich Dziekan’s administration violated the state’s Freedom of Information Act by telling a citizen he had to pay $720 up front before the city would comply with a request for public documents.
Robert Lee, the Florida resident who submitted the freedom of information request, said the Dzeikan administration tried to hide information by stonewalling him.
“It seemed to me they wanted to delay this. They didn’t want to give me the information,” Lee testified during a FOI hearing.
The hearing was in August 2023, but this is the first time the violation has been covered by a media outlet. The audio from the hearing is posted below.

DERBY – A video production class at Derby High School creates a weekly news magazine show that is anything but stodgy.
The show, “WRBR,” is in its fourth year of production. It started as a traditional broadcast with anchors at a desk reading school announcements. Now it’s a multi-segmented show that reflects the personalities of its creators.
The 11-minute broadcast from May 17 starts with anchor Genesis Ocasio introducing the question of the week: ‘are you a hoarder?’ She then throws it to an edited segment during which student reporters Ismael Citalan and Matthew Wint pepper fellow students with the query.
19 Valley organizations will be holding their second annual back-to-school giveaway at the Nolan Field parking lot in Ansonia at 11:30 a.m., Aug. 17.
Bookbags and other school supplies will be given away for as long as supplies last, and free pizza will be provided for the kids by Casa Bianca. Children must be accompanied by a parent. All families are eligible, regardless of town.

ANSONIA – Valley Republicans nominated Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti to challenge state Rep. Kara Rochelle (D‑Ansonia) for her seat in the state House of Representatives.
“I am proud to accept your nomination to be the new champion of the Valley in Hartford, to be the voice of a unified Valley that will never throw in the towel,” Cassetti said May 16 to a crowd of about 30 people during a nominating convention at the Ansonia Armory on State Street.
Cassetti, who has previously said that he intends to serve as state Rep. and mayor simultaneously, said the Valley is neglected in state politics. He drew on his experiences both as mayor and as a former boxer, saying that he will bring a fighting spirit to Hartford.
DERBY — The following information was taken from a Derby Historical Society email newsletter:
The Derby Historical Society would like to host a Valley History Bus Tour this Fall.
We are reaching out to the community to see if there is an interest in this event. This would be a ticketed event where participants would get on a bus and experience the Valley Heritage Driving Tour with a tour guide.
There will be several opportunities to get off the bus with the group at specific sites. Lunch and snacks would be provided. The tour will run approximately 4 hours, beginning at 10 a.m.
