The Girl in the café (Bill Nighy + Kelly McDonald / Great movie with a bad title)
Does anyone know that film? It's a british television film that never had much exposure but it's damn fantastic. Bill Nighy and Amy McDonald are both fantastic actors, that too seldom get the main parts in a movie. The only thing I don't like about this movie is it's title - which makes it appear like a cheesy romantic movie when it is actually so much more. Nighy is so great in his role. McDonald is perfect - even if the film was bad, I'd still watch it for her accent in that movie. The movie also has a very powerfull topic later on. Just watch it.
I don't want to spoil it to you, just try to find it somewhere. There's an unusual trailer on YouTube, which is actually more like the beginning of the movie but here it is: https://youtu.be/cqxZ4BCZuL4
I saw it when it was released. I remember the actors were outstanding (McDonald won a supporting actress Emmy for the role, and was nominated for a Golden Globe in the lead category). I thought the story was really interesting and actually similar to another film from that year - The Constant Gardener, you should check it out if you haven’t already. I disagree about the title, though - it gave me the idea of a basic and generic premisse, which made the real plot seem even more surprising while I was discovering it.
I remember watching it on HBO back in 2005 and loving it. I don't remember much since then, but I did like the "one person can inspire change" theme.
*Macdonald. She’s Scottish.
