It’s has a lot of good pathways that all ready you up for college. There are plenty of electives to take that get you involved with the community/school. The teachers here do care about their students and do their best to teach.
Overall my experience at Millikan was very interesting and different, as half of my time being there was online due to COVID. Many instances I felt separated from my education but other times it allowed me to be independent and get ready for college and learn more internet tools .
For the past 4 years at Millikan, I have enjoyed my experience participating in a sport, joining clubs and making long life friends.
Overall Millikan is a great high school to attend. Their college and career center is extremely helpful not only for the upperclassmen but lower as well. The activities and events at this school are upbringing and fun for most students.
Over the past three years I’ve spent at Millikan I’ve gone through many experiences on campus both good and bad. There have been times on campus that I’ve been able to fully express myself and feel represented as a black student on campus but there have been time where I’ve felt the exact opposite. Thankfully I’ve been experience a lot more positives.
Millikan has its ups and downs. I believe that your Millikan experience will fall on who you surround yourself around. Millikan lacks a big amount of diversity. However, in recent days I have seen them try and push out more cultural backgrounds. I always say make the best of any situation you’re given and take the opportunity. There are plenty of learning opportunities at Millikan given to people with different interests.
In my experience at Millikan High, I haven't had any bad experiences. With a wide selection of classes and student-based schedules, my classes have always felt right to me. I enjoy my classes, the people, and the activities. Football games, lacrosse games, basketball games, Millikan has it all. A good variety of performance arts as well, filled with talent. The teachers I have come into contact with have great personalities, policies, and classes. Whether a vigorous or standard level of difficulty is desired, the classes fill both boxes. Free resources such as the college and career center, the wellness center, the library/free tutoring gives so many opportunities to improve. The worst experience I've had if any, was having to pick out a school outfit each day with the uniform policies. Staff are watching what students wear even if the actual clothing is fine other than a color of size of logo.
QUEST program has prepared my daughter to know what to expect in college thru all the AP classes she was able to take.
School is spatially small but has a large student body. Great teachers at all grade levels, specifically in the QUEST program. One of, if not the best school in Long Beach for performing arts. Highly competitive sports teams. Future renovations expected to include air conditioning in all classroom and a new pool facility.
Everyone is beyond kind and interactive. I think it’s really easy making friends here at this school and the environment itself is healthy and enjoyable for school academics. I also think their academics are successful because of the teachers located there.
I enjoyed Millikan's small learning communities (SLC's). They were subgroups within the school based on your subject of interest. I was a PEACE student, our focus was social justice. I had access to classes about law and social policy that helped shape my interests and moral compass as an adult. The teacher's within my SLC made my high school experience special and engaging. Without Millikan's attention to my special interests I don't think i would have appreciated the high school experience as thoroughly as I did.
I really enjoyed my Senior year and all the teachers in the Quest program were super helpful. The school itself is large, several thousand students, but because of the niche programs within the school, each operates almost like it is a school within a school.
Millikan High School was an enriching experience that prepared me well for college. The staff and teachers were excellent and provided a safe and comfortable environment for students to learn.
My time at Millikan High School has been pretty positive. They have made an effort to be inclusive, by celebrating various different communities through announcements on the school wide PA system. As well as holding celebrations in the school quad. They have also have a place for everyone in the school. While most everything is positive about the school, there is nothing perfect. But I wouldn't change where I am, the school has prepared me for life after high school.
All in all, I really enjoyed my time at Millikan. I had a lot of really good teachers who cared about their subjects and students, and I also met some pretty amazing people. Even though my high school experience was impacted by the pandemic, my school made sure to make a plan and ensure we were still getting an education. On the negative side of things, I did have some teachers who didn't really know their subject well enough to be teaching it to us - for example, they would only read off the slides and we would have to teach ourselves. I've also overheard a teacher talking bad about the freshman asking for advice on my very first day of high school, so that didn't start things off too well. Millikan's office staff (not counselors, just those in the office area) were also really rude and mean to the student - I'm not the only one who thinks that. So. maybe the school could work with their staff to make sure they're welcoming, but it was mainly a great experience for me.
I would say it was an over all great experience. There were just some people working there that shouldn’t be. And some of the students were homophobic and racist. But the program I was in (peace) helped me learn so much about how we can help improve ourselves and our world and I will forever thank Millikan for. I would like to see more classes about the problems in America because not al lot of people know about them.
Millikan high school was a good school overall I just believe they have some unethical rules there. In regards to the dress code they previously loosened up on it and had a larger variety of what you could wear outside of the uniform colors like black, white, un collared shirts etc but then they decided to change that based in “parent” output but i believe it’s important to hear from students and go based off of what they like because if they are subject to just uniform they will be more likely to revel and break dress code however the staff is very welcoming and make the students feel welcomed and like they have someone to talk to if they need to. There are numerous staff members more than I can count on one hand that I felt I could talk to and who made school enjoyable
