Summary

  • Psych 4 is confirmed to be in development.
  • The cast of Psych 4 is likely to include James Roday Rodriguez and Dulé Hill reprising their roles, with other cast members from previous movies also expected to return.
  • The plot of Psych 4 has not been revealed yet, but it will continue the story directly after the events of Psych 3: This Is Gus, leaving the possibilities open for what could happen to Shawn and Gus next.

Psych 4 is the next Peacock movie spinoff of the 2006–2014 series, and will reveal what’s in store next for Shawn and Gus. Debuting on the USA Network in 2006 before moving to NBC, Psych focuses on crime consultants Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster, who somehow manage to solve a variety of cases by relying on Spencer’s incredible observational skills and Gus’s above-average intelligence and inability to say no to Shawn and his ridiculous suggestions — such as pretending to be psychic and tricking both witnesses and suspects to crack a case.

The basic premise only scratches the surface of why Psych is so popular. Everything from Shawn’s endless nicknames for Gus to the chemistry between Rodriguez, Hill, and the rest of the cast ensured the crime comedy-drama endured long after the final episode in 2014. Peacock has brought three Psych movies to subscribers, most recently with 2021’s Psych 3: This Is Gus, and all have been successes for the streamer.

An Original Star Tease A Future Return

Shawn and Gus look on in shock in Psych 3: This Is Gus

Even before the fourth movie has even been made, Simpson seems to think more installments of the TV and movie franchise are on the horizon.

Though definite news regarding the sequel is still elusive, the latest update sees actor Jimmi Simpson reveal his thoughts on Psych 4. When asked about the prospect of another Psych movie, the Mary Lightly actor didn't hesitate to guarantee he would return at some point in the future. Though he seemingly ruled out being a part of Psych 4, Simpson said "I will always be a part of Psych." Even before the fourth movie has even been made, Simpson seems to think more installments of the TV and movie franchise are on the horizon.

Read Simpson's full quote below:

Here's the thing: James Roday Rodriguez is my ride or die. Half the time, early on, the reason why Mary [Lightly] kept coming back is because I needed health insurance. James was like, "Well, I'll come to the reason why Mary's back." So, I will always be a part of Psych. That will not be the last one. He's always throwing ideas at me of like, "What about this? What about this?" And I'm always like, Yes, yes, yes." Mary will never die, don't worry.

Psych 4 Is Confirmed (Sort Of)

The Project Was Revealed In 2022

Shawn and Gus sing in the Psych musical episode.

Psych 4 is confirmed, with early reports and rumors around the development of the next Psych movie circulating from early 2022. What’s been difficult to pin down are concrete specifics, though there are multiple reasons why this is as explained by star James Roday Rodriguez in May 2023:

“The only reason that Psych 4 didn’t happen [in 2022] was scheduling. It was all lined up, and we would’ve made an announcement, but then we just couldn’t pull it together in time with everybody going off to do [other projects]. So, now we just kind of have to regroup, wait for Peacock to decide that they want to pay for it again, and hopefully we’ll be good.”

While the next Psych movie does appear to have been in active development and conversations are happening between the cast, creative team, and Peacock, there’s not been an official confirmation yet from the streamer or owners, NBCUniversal. The 2023 Hollywood strikes, further complicated the status of Psych 4.

The WGA strike began in May 2023 and was resolved in September 2023, and the SAG-AFTRA strike began in July 2023 and was resolved in November 2023.

Psych 4 Cast

Shawn & Gus Will Return

There are two names guaranteed to return to the cast of Psych 4, and no new Psych movie would be complete without James Roday Rodriguez as hyper-observant detective and fake psychic Shawn Spencer. Rodriguez will be joined by Dulé Hill as Gus, Shawn’s initially unwilling partner who has been with him through all 8 seasons and 3 movies of Psych. The rest of the cast of Psych 4 will be unclear until more about the movie is known. Many Psych cast members have returned for the first three Psych movies, and it’s safe to assume that the same will be the case in the next one.

Kirsten Nelson will likely reprise her role as Chief Karen Vick, for example, and Timothy Omundson feels like a safe bet as he’s played Carlton Lassiter in every Psych project and has spoken candidly about the status of Psych 4. Jazmyn Simon will also presumably be back as Selene, since she married Gus in Psych 3: This Is Gus.

A Brand-New Mystery For Gus & Shawn

Shawn pretends to use his mental powers while Gus smirks in Psych

The Psych 4 plot has yet to be revealed, though it will take place more-or-less directly after 2021’s Psych 3: This Is Gus. While it was revealed that the script is finished, none of the writing-related updates have included plot details. Until more is revealed about Psych 4 and what to expect from the plot, any theories are purely speculative, as literally anything could happen to Gus and Shawn after the events of the last movie. However, the movie will likely involve a brand-new mystery for the team to solve.
