Product Description
Kara Gentry has always had everything money can buy. Jessie Wilkins is from the other side of the tracks. When seated next to each other on a plane headed to the heartland, these two teenage girls strike up an unlikely friendship. They soon find they’re both being forced to spend the holidays in the same small town with relatives they've never met. Neither girl is happy about their holiday arrangements so they devise a plan to switch places for Christmas and have fun with this situation. Jessie finds herself living lavishly with the Kara's wealthy grandparents, though the frost isn't solely on the windowpanes. Kara finds herself with Jessie’s fun, quirky grandmother and the most genuine, modest family she’s ever met. With a little help from Santa and a Christmas wish, Kara and Jessie find the families they've always wanted and discover an even bigger surprise they never expected.

wrong things which destroy love and connection? What I especially enjoyed was the presence of mistakes, yes, but the lack of dysfunction (with
one exception) and sickening drama and blame being throne around.
The basic story is two young women happen to get on the same flight seated next to each other, discovering they are going to the same town, each on a trip to see a family or part of a family which they have not seen in a very long time or not at all, each believing they were not even loved. Sighing, listening to each other's story, wishing they could trade places - it's only a week's vacation, after all - they decide to trade places.
Each of them finds something important in their new life, each deciding for themselves which values are really important to them, for one is part of a very rich family, and the other a very poor one.
There's a local beauty/talent pageant to herald Christmas, and, unknownst at first to each other, they both are entered. This was a special treat because the girls (Kira and Jessie) both have sweet, clear voices, very very pleasant to hear. One wins the pageant, and the seams in their innocent plan start pulling apart and little secrets and confusions start to wiggle out.
Truthfully, I had a little bit of trouble making sure I could tell who from whom, because in the end, it looked like they were interrelated! What impressed me the most was that in the poor family, they always reinforced their love and belief in each other's worth, and that a creative, good solution to every problem was usually available. In the rich family, the values exhibited were rigid control, judgement, ranking themselves above
others, and generally measuring human worth with wealth. That was uncomfortable. As I said, it seemed as if the two families were interrelated,
and some of the rigid values were loosened with more caring and sharing in a way to make the families stronger, not weaker.
I ended up liking and enjoying almost EVERYONE, including the music they played and sang, except the rich wife whose specialty was judgementalism, exclusivity, and snobbishness, played by Bo Derek, who did a good job looking down her nose without being carping or spiteful
and hateful about it.
Otherwise, there was just a lot of caring, and good country music going around. I listened to that up to the last minute, unusual for me.
If you like to witness lovingness, and how that helps resolve problems, I DO recommend this little gem of a film!

Two Vermont-raised teen girls meet and switch places on an airplane as they go to meet unknown family for their Holiday Vacation in Oklahoma. There's a beauty pageant, a rivalry, and a twist to the end that makes all the pieces fall into place.
4/5 Stars.
This movie was fun. If you took the story of the City Mouse and the Country Mouse, crossed it with The Prince and the Pauper and added a dash each of Gilmore Girls and The Parent Trap, You would get this film. More a story of family than romance. Although the subjects of divorce and infidelity are brought up along the way and treated less seriously than they should be, in my opinion.
Acting was lovely, with Shelley Long (Brady Bunch) and Christian Kane (Leverage) and a few people I would know if I was more in tune with pop culture, but I'm not. I'll be adding this one to my Christmas movie cannon. Lovely.
