Reviews
- A good compilation. Many of the tracks featured were recorded in the 50s-the sound quality is better on this SACD than other compilations but still far from audiophile quality!
- This is a nice SACD release of Tony Bennett's Greatest Hits. You've got 15 tracks from his classic 60s output, and 5 newer songs for an even 20. Some of his all-time best are here, including I Left My Heart in San Francisco, The Good Life, and I Wanna Be Around, which are just as good ad they've always been. I also enjoy Tony's versions of Night and Day and Stranger in Paradise.
Sonically, this is a very clear and nice sounding SACD. I wouldn't say it is a reference CD, as it doesn't quite pop out at first listen. But it isn't harsh and doesn't wear you down on repeated listens like a plenthora of other CDs. Sometimes the age of the recording shows on this SACD between the tracks, and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing that I can notice it based on the format.
Biggest knock against this disc is that a couple of the tracks here are complete clunkers, especially the new songs, while his sonically more appealing work is completely ignored. I particularly hate his cover of How Do You Keep The Music Playing, and am saddened that his hit This Is All I Ask is nowhere to be found here. Nor is any of the work from the two albums he did with Bill Evers. I think Columbia at the time put this out to try to steer folks to Tony's newer works. But I would have rather had all of his greatest hits in one place.
Overall though, it is an affordable SACD that has a nice collection of hits and to my knowledge, isn't upsampled or its tracks taken from a CD Master. Considering the cost of many SACDs today, I'd say it was worth it.
