Despite a seriously impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes and being one of the most essential shows of the generation, It’s A Sin is leaving Netflix this month.
The 2021 series, written by Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies, is set in London between 1981 and 1991 during the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Starring Olly Alexander, Omari Douglas, Lydia West, Nathanial Curtis and Keeley Hawes, it follows a group of gay men and their friends navigating the devastating effects of the disease, concluding with a heart-breaking finale that saw one of the main characters die from AIDS.
At the time, Channel 4 labelled the series its ‘most-binged new series ever’ and broke records with 6.5million viewers streaming it in its first month since release.
The drama scored six Bafta TV nominations and had fans in heaps of tears, branding it ‘the greatest television series I’ve ever seen,’ with even Sir Elton John revealing he was a huge fan.
It also inspired a record number of people to get tested for HIV, with Eurovision star Olly highlighting the importance.
And on Rotten Tomatoes, It’s A Sin has an average audience score of 92%, with Richard saying in a review: ‘Masterfully written and beautifully acted, It’s a Sin is essential viewing.’
Sarah added: ‘It’s A Sin is arguably Davies’ masterpiece, a heartfelt series into which he has clearly poured every fibre of his being to create an involving, devastating and often very funny piece of TV.’
‘Perfectly-paced, devastatingly written, and played to perfection by an ensemble cast that doesn’t miss a beat, It’s a Sin is a near-flawless piece of television,’ Lauren echoed.
But despite the immense success, It’s A Sin will be leaving Netflix on May 24.
Fans of the show need not worry though, it will still be available to watch on Channel 4’s streaming platform.
Meanwhile this month, a whole host of fan-favourites are leaving the streaming platform, including Mamma Mia!, 27 Dresses and Jurassic Park.
Previously speaking about the series, Olly credited It’s A Sin for educating him as he admitted he used to be scared to talk about Aids when he was younger.
‘As a young gay man I was scared of AIDs because we were not allowed to talk about being gay at school,’ the actor, 33, explained.
‘The series has given me a lot of understanding of what that period was like, it’s legacy, and a lot of context as to who I am. It has been interesting.’
