Al-Ashraf Khalil

al-Ashraf Khalil (1262-14 December 1293) was Sultan of Mameluke Egypt from 12 November 1290 to 14 December 1293, succeeding al-Mansur Qalawun and preceding al-Nasir Muhammad.

Biography[]

al-Ashraf Khalil was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1262, the second son of Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun and the brother of al-Nasir Muhammad. He succeeded his father as Sultan in 1290, and he moved to finish his father's conquest of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. He oversaw the Fall of Acre in 1291, and he had Acre's fortifications destroyed. Within weeks, he also captured Tyre, Sidon, Beirut, Haifa, and Tartus, and the Pope failed to organize a new crusade due to a lack of interest among the Latin Christian kingdoms and the persecution of the Templar Order. al-Ashraf Khalil soon became unpopular among his emirs, as he executed several powerful nobles who threatened his rule. He was assassinated in 1293 while walking with a friend.
