A forgotten gem of a movie with Tab Hunter & Natalie Wood!

I was born in 1956, the year this was made so I really was not familiar with it. Since Tab Hunter passed away last week I've watched two of his films, Battle Cry and this one. For some reason I never really knew much about Tab Hunter or his work. I like some westerns but not many are that good, but I'm including this as one of my favorites for sure. For a film to be so overlooked by so many, it seems a shame this has been hidden for so long.
Tab and Natalie are great together, and their friendship grows over the course of the film which is cool. The villains are given coffee spiked with poison weeds by Maria which is funny, and the scenery is breathtaking. I enjoyed this film from start to finish. That can't be said for most.

Liked this Western, but unfortunately the sound was very poor. I had my TV turned up to 100% - still it wasn't where we could hear the movie at times, so we missed hearing some of the dialog. Color was great - it was just the sound that was so disappointing.

"The Burning Hills" is one of those Warner Brothers, made in Cinemascope with my all time favorite male actor Tab Hunter.

His female partner in this western is Natalie Wood who became famous "Rebel Without a Cause" and immortal in the movie history as Maria in "West Side Story".

Co-Stars are: Earl Holliman, Claude Akins, Ray Teal, Skip Homeier - (each of those appearing also in "Bonanza").

DVD:

Still none subtitles available o this Warner Brother Archive Collections.
The Picture Quality is ok/acceptable. Contains some damages and it could be sharper.

Fazit: thrilling western, with very good actors...definitive a MUST have for Tab Hunter Fans

Some western lovers don't like this much, mainly I suspect, because Tab Hunter is the lead. To me, Tab is not my idea of a western hero, but he does try, particularly in the pretty violent action/fight scenes. This DVD courtesy of Warner Archive comes in a good Scope transfer. The colour is a bit variable in places but I've seen much worse, and shouldn't put you off. It's a standard Western tale... Homesteader Tab's brother is murdered by 3 (or is it 4??) men whose faces we never see (and maybe this is just me, quite who they were is not made crystal clear-Skip, Earl, Tyler Mcvey?). Tab goes after the Sutton family who are rich landowners who he believes are responsible. Sadly he is forced to shoot Pa Sutton (a wonderful vicious perf from Ray Teal), and, shot in his escape he is saved by Natalie Wood and they are pursued through "The Burning Hills" by vengeful, very nasty son Skip Homeier and his gang. There is plenty of action including 2 very long and violent fistfights, with Holliman and then Homeier, and a rather out of place Commanche attack on the bad guys. A bit too much talk in places perhaps, but it is still a good, beautifully filmed western, and apart from Tab, very well cast. I have seldom seen Ray teal in a better role and Skip is always reliable (as Spike says in his review he might just have been better in Tab's role, but that was never to be). Natalie Wood, nearly in her prime, does as well as she can, lumbered with fairly cliched "Andalay,Arriba" mutterings and an awful accent. The villains are well cast-Claude Akins (actually not so bad), Rayford Barnes, Tyler McVey, Hal Baylor, and another very nasty role for Earl Holliman who, I fancy, enjoyed himself. Not quite 5 stars, but a good standard "A" Western.
