Sara Stewart New York Post Stylistically it's a beauty, with khaki-uniformed waifs fighting for their lives to a crashing classical score. Rated: 3/4 May 25, 2012 Full Review A.O. Scott New York Times Awful deaths (and hysterical reactions to them) punctuate declarations of love and friendship, revelations of treachery and heavily armed expressions of angst. Rated: 3.5/5 May 24, 2012 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Forgive the film its small flaws of histrionic performances and cheap execution for the giddy rush of its banal, Verhoevenesque atmosphere... Rated: 4/5 May 22, 2012 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Battle Royale” stands as a definite cult movie, from Takeshi Kitano's presence to the way it inspired Tarantino, to the violent portrayal of youth and sociopolitical criticism unfolds against a backdrop of dark humor and an evocative soundtrack. Rated: 8 Mar 3, 2024 Full Review Javier G. Trigales Espinof The "groundbreaking" premise of Battle Royale remains a good black comedy diversion that's more conventional than some wanted it to be. sweet z First of all, it is not a movie that appeals to everyone. If you are not familiar with Japanese movies, it may seem a bit boring and you may find serious logical errors. The genre of the movie is actually action-comedy. It also has serious drama scenes at times, but then it also includes some funny scenes,The basis of the famous computer game PUBG also comes from this movie. 7/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Marian A this is one of the most movies to ever movie and if i see one more person suggest it gets an american remake i will actually scream Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Aldo G A mini-masterpiece. Not suitable for the prudish. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Dave S Due to a debilitating recession and juvenile delinquency run amok, the Japanese government passes legislation to cull the unruly hoard of teenagers plaguing society. Taken to a remote deserted island, groups of teens are advised to fight to the death over a three-day period, a process that will result in only one survivor. More subversive than The Purge and considerably more amped up than The Hunger Games (and a precursor to both), Battle Royale is an often stylish but always darkly funny, vaguely satirical, and relentlessly violent film that is a bleak commentary on Japanese society. Granted, there are far too many characters to keep track of and the flashbacks are more distracting than anything else, but Battle Royale ultimately accomplishes what it sets out to do - entertain.
