In a world of big city China restaurant pricing, good quality food at reasonable cost is hard to come by, short of the more street food approach. This location of Tim Ho Wan was worth the walk for us. It is decidedly a turn and...burn affair, so don't expect to loiter. The highlight was the much touted barbecue pork buns, though my wife and I sampled a host of dishes over three visits. Service is hit and miss though I would say a bit more of a miss. Abrupt would be complimentary closer to rude perhaps more accurate. I was actually told to pull my chair closer in to the table at one point. I would like to share that I am 6'3" and if I got any closer to the table I would have been on top of the bloody table. Further, I was already occupying less than half the space between myself and the next table and the other guest was nowhere near me. You can tell that this pushed my buttons in a bad way. Almost enough to cause me to reconsider coming back. Finally, the chaotic nature of a bit of a touristy trap - given its reasonably deserved decent reputation, is a too overworked staff. Multiple time we had dishes not show up and yet others served that were not the ones ordered. Given that you order numerous of the small dishes it becomes difficult to keep track of. All this said, my wife and I were satisfied with the food though somewhat less so with the service. On balance though, a solid place.More

First off, dont get to hyped just because this place has a Michelin star. Because although it has,it has always stayed true to its humble origins. The interior is simple, the service as well. However all is made up for by the food! I, perhaps,...was lucky enough to visit at a quiet time, so presure was not so high in the kitchen. All the food served was on point and tasted wunderfull. I can whole-heartedly recommend all dumpling/Dimsum variaties and my personal favorite the BBQ pork buns! All and all I spend just under $10 USD for an abundance of food.More

Absolutely disappointing the rice noodle with shrimp was small broken pieces and very small portions and soy sauce was not what it should be. The famous signature baked bun also wasn't up to my expectations and the noodles dried shrimp roe was the worst. I...travel from Australia to try this Dim Sum Shop utterly disappointed. The baked bun with BBQ pork is my favorite. Absolute delicious! The shrimp dumplings, and steamed beef balls are also excellent. Reasonable prices. Only cash. A must visit in HKG.

Overall, if you’re nearby it’s a rather good place to have a meal, but it doesn’t worth to go here on purpose. We chose best-sellers: baked buns with BBQ pork, steamed shrimp dumplings and shrimp&pork dumplings. Everything was tasty, but buns were really interesting, dumplings...are not striking. Michelin guide recommends to try steamed beef balls with bean curd, this time we haven’t tried it. Low prices. There is variety of teas and soft drinks. Easy to find something for you - there are English names of every dish and pictures as well. Many places to seat. Here you can also to order take away.More

The Michelin Guide awarded one star to Tim Ho Wan (THW) in 2010, and to the Sham Shui Po branch (and 2 other HK branches) in 2015. Now, I've been to other THW restaurants, including in other countries, but the Sham Shui Po branch has...been on my to-do list for a while. I'm not going to second-guess the good people who publish the guide (though I do think they sometimes get it wrong!), so will just post pictures of the food. The taste of the food (and indeed, the interior) seems to be consistent across restaurants, including those in other countries, which is always a good sign. Service at this branch is efficient (which is not always the case in my experience). Pick a non-peak period to visit (I arrived at 4pm), and they let you linger as long as you want to. The Baked bun with BBQ pork is their signature dish, quite the star, and a personal favourite. I'd also recommend the Crispy "LaiChi" stuffed with minced pork for its uniqueness - minced pork stuff in lychee fruit, and batter fried. Complimentary black tea is served, with endless free re-fills. My one non-food and non-service related gripe is with the washroom in this branch - they really should just put in a new one, the current one is a (not unclean) wreck! The restaurant is a quick metro ride from Central, and a short walk from Prince Edward station. The big green sign outside is in Chinese (I missed it and walked past, since there was no queue when I arrived). The prices are very, very reasonable. The restaurant does not accept credit card payments. In summary, the Michelin star is well and truly deserved.More

I was stunned to find that so many people had complaint about the service in their Tai Kok Tsui Branch but still there is no improvement from the restaurant. I went to the restaurant in December with my relatives family from abroad, We expected high...because of the Michelin rating. It was lunch hour and it was a bit cool outside. The queue was long, (It's Michelin, right?) There were 6 of us. 4 were waiting but 2 went into the shopping mall just to check on the medicine. The lady at the door called our number but did not let us in because 2 of us were missing. We told them they would be right back but she just ignored. For such a tiny shop it is not easy to find a table for 6. We missed it and waited for another hour. We found that she was giving tables randomly and never got back to us. We explained and almost begged for the mercy of the lady. The more we came to her, the longer we waited. I totally agree with the previous reviews saying that its service is beyond the limit of a normal customer. We honestly felt like fools. Totally disappointed. We waited for an hour and a half until we were kind of confirmed that the lady was just making fun of us. We left. As locals I can just leave the restaurant forever but for tourists, it affects the image of HK and also of the crediblitiy of Michelin ratings. I do think Michelin should review their mechanism and take off stars if restaurants cannot provide reasonable service to the customers. Afterall, the food, the environment are just fair with one or two signature dimsums, Prices are cheap. That's all.More

We had to walk a bit to find it, as we were at that moment in Kowloon area. Totally worth it!!! I had read that this is the cheapest Michelin restaurant in the world and wanted to give it a go. Amazing food, quick service,...and.....amazing food!! We add, spring rolls, chicken feet amongst other delicious dim sum options. All were perfectly cooked and as tasteful as they get. Highly recommended! Go!!More

Was there arround 2pm for lunch, a couple people were waiting in front of me but got seated in no time to a shared table, which I enjoy doing as a solo traveler. You get a piece of paper to order and check what you...want. Service is fast, you get some tea (I think you get charged for it but it was almost nothing and typical of all the Dim Sum places I went to). The food was really good and I enjoyed every bite, well worth it. Nothing fancy about this place, kinda old and basic but service and food is excellent. Surprisingly to me, it was packed with locals and very few tourists. Another place I went to close by, also highly rated for Dim Sum, was newer, fancier with a good 50% tourists crowd but not quite as good as this one if you ask me.More

Tim Ho Wan - specifically the Sham Shui Po branch - was featured in the Michelin guide. It is good, authentic HK dimsum. Very authentic topped with typical HK style “rude” service, crowded seating, and noisy ambiance. Overall the experience is very genuine. But food...wise, the dimsum is nothing special - it’s comparable to any other dimsum restaurants. As a native Asian I wouldn’t revisit Tim Ho Wan. But it’s worth trying out for the atmosphere you wouldn’t get at modern dimsum restaurants.More
