The flood of Atomic Rooster releases over the past decade has effectively confused record buyers; most of the cd's have been nothing more than uneventful compilations with varying titles (a notable exception is "Live In Germany 1983"). In 2000, however, Angel Air released "Rarities", a vastly underrated set that finally unearthed some 'new' material. Licensed by sometime AR guitarist/singer/songwriter/etc. John Du Cann, "Rarities" was really a gift to the fans. But it also was a gift that appeared to be a one-off.
Almost a decade later we finally get the Atomic Rooster album we've all been waiting for. Again licensed by Du Cann, "Homework" is simply...hell, most of it isn't even really Atomic Rooster. Perhaps many of the tracks are obviously unfinished and seemingly aimless, but there are a few decent things.
Consisting of 17 demos Du Cann recorded on his own, most of which were intended to be re-recorded for the Polydor deal of '82 which called for two 12" singles (added to this disc as an amazing bonus) and an album. The album never happened, and the tapes just gathered dust for around 25 years.
Most of these demo tracks are faceless in their own bizarre way. But 'The Devil In Me' could have been one of the greatest-ever Atomic Rooster recordings, had the band ever recorded it (which of course they didn't). One can only imagine what "Homework" would have sounded like had Polydor stuck to their deal and Vincent Crane been involved to turn these tracks into full-band Atomic Rooster music. We'll never know, but it would had to have been far better than what we have on this disc.
