An important factor to consider when calculating your total cost to go to Disney is whether you’re going to pay for priority access (AKA “skipping the lines”) at some rides and attractions. So how much is a Fast Pass at Disney World? Let’s dive in.

Are Fast Passes Still Free?

A lot has changed at Walt Disney World since the pandemic, and FastPass is no exception.

First of all, FastPass (at least as we always knew it) is no more. There is still a system in place that lets you skip the lines at some rides, but it’s no longer free and it’s no longer called FastPass.

History of FastPass

Let’s start at the beginning. If you don’t recall the old Fast Pass system, here’s a quick refresher.

For many years, Disney offered something called “FastPass” — a way for its Guests to avoid waiting in line for the most popular rides and shows in the park.

Original Version: FastPass

In the original version of this system, Guests would go up to a machine outside the attraction, insert their ticket, and would receive a little slip of paper that showed a one-hour “return window.” You would come back to the ride during that one-hour period, use a separate entrance line, and get onboard with a much shorter wait. Once you rode (or at least two hours had passed), you could go get another Fast Pass for another ride. There was no charge to use this system.

Second Version: FastPass+

Later on, a second version called “FastPass+” came along. This version kept the idea of the alternate entrances and the one-hour return window, and was still free. The changes? You no longer needed to go to each ride to get the return ticket; you would instead pre-schedule three return windows using the My Disney Experience app — and could do so about two months in advance of your trip! You could also select your preferred return windows for each ride, versus just having to take “first available” in the original version of the system

Third/Current Version: Lightning Lane and Genie+

In October 2021, the third version of the system came along. The FastPass entrances at each ride at Disney World were renamed “Lightning Lane,” and there were now two ways to access those priority entrances — both of which require a fee to be pad.  Guests had the option of a paid package deal called Genie+ and a paid single entry called Individual Lightning Lane. Each attraction that has a Lightning Lane entrance is included either in the Genie+ package or sold as an Individual Lightning Lane — not both.

Disney Genie+ Package for Lightning Lane Access

The Disney Genie+ service allows you to purchase multiple Lightning Lane entries under a single price. The cost of Genie+ varies based on date and demand; expect to spend somewhere between $15-$25 per person, per day. The more crowded the parks are, the higher the price.

You’ll need to purchase Genie+ via the MyDisneyExperience app on your mobile device on the day you’re visiting the park. Once you’ve paid your fee, you’ll be able to make your first ride reservation as early as 7:00 AM if you’re staying at a Disney Resort Hotel. If you’re staying elsewhere, you’ll have to wait until the park opens for the day.

It’s important to note that — much like the original version of Fast Pass — Genie+ lets you make only one reservation at a time. Based on this restriction — and the fact that the system is back to “first available” versus picking a preferred time window — Disney says most Guests can reasonably expect to use the service to skip the line at 2-3 rides per day during crowded times (maybe more on slower days).

Individual Lightning Lane Entry Cost

Most of the attractions which have a Lightning Lane entrance are eligible for Genie+ — but a few are not. Lightning Lanes at the most high-demand rides at each park — usually the newest or most thrilling — are not included in Genie+ and can only be accessed by buying individual access. One such example is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

Costs vary — typically from around $10 to $20 (but occasionally a few dollars more or less) — depending on the popularity of a particular experience and the time of year. All prices are per person, per ride.

Individual Lightning Lane reservations are completely separate from Genie+ reservations; they don’t count as your “one at a time” for Genie+. That said, you can’t keep paying over and over to ride over and over; it’s one Individual Lightning Lane entry per ride/attraction, per day.
