Editorial Reviews

Review

"Cameron’s lovely prose is grounded in a keen awareness of her inner and outer worlds, which are described so vividly that the reader comes to feel like one of her many 'intimates.' Artists and others looking to tap into their intuition will find plenty of wisdom here." ―Publishers Weekly

"Sometimes, when we feel stuck or afraid, we look to others for guidance. In
Living the Artist's Way Julia Cameron shows us that the guidance we seek actually comes from somewhere deep within and is available at any time. This wise and encouraging book is a series of invitations to connection, creative confidence and commitment to the writing path. Accept those invitations and a whole world will open up for you." ―Beth Kempton, bestselling author of Wabi Sabi

About the Author

Hailed by the New York Times as “The Queen of Change,” JULIA CAMERON is credited with starting a movement in 1992 that has brought creativity into the mainstream conversation―in the arts, in business, and in everyday life. She is the best-selling author of more than forty books, fiction and nonfiction; a poet, songwriter, filmmaker and playwright. Commonly referred to as “The Godmother” or “High Priestess” of creativity, her tools are based in practice, not theory, and she considers herself “the floor sample of her own toolkit.” The Artist’s Way has been translated into forty languages and sold over five million copies to date.

I'll be quick.
July 1995: My late wife buys me THE ARTIST'S WAY
August 1995: I start doing the morning pages.
October 1995: I stop gambling.
November 1995: I stop drinking
December 1995: I start writing what would be my first novel.
It's 28+ years later. I have written 10 books. And I still do the morning pages every day. But I am in the hallway creatively and spiritually. And of course, here comes this book Saturday. Suddenly, I feel like I have a shot. Let's see if someone else's work can change a life twice....

Doing the process of the author’s first book, The Artist’s Way, magically (it seemed) birthed my first book. There is profound alchemy in the processes Julia Cameron shares in her books and this book on how to live day by day by “guidance” is another wonderful offering. I, too, live my life in the manner she describes in this book and it is so affirming, grounding, and uplifting to read exactly how this author does it. This book is so personal, accessible, authentic…it is like a conversation on the topic with a dear friend who is constantly encouraging, “Trust yourself, trust your guidance, and trust the process.” Anyone who takes this way of living to heart will find peace, grace, and life solutions. Highly recommended.

Thought provoking. I skipped around some.

I have been a fan of Cameron's for years. I always benefited from journaling and Cameron's concept of Morning Pages brought insights from that experience to a new level. Writing for personal expression and insight is one thing but doing it for guidance is at another level.

One reason I like Cameron's teaching is her belief in higher forces that can provide guidance. Her method is not restricted to a certain religious discipline but can be used by people of any faith.

As is her habit of late, Cameron lets us look into her own life and the lives of others as to how writing for guidance plays out. She also gives exercises such as questions to ask to set off the writing experience. She stimulates us to write about concerns we have, decisions we need to make, areas where we need more information, and more.

Cameron has given us many tools over the years: Morning Pages, Artist's Dates, Walks, and now Writing for Guidance. I, like many others, have found great benefit in following these practices and recommend her latest book to continue the writing experiences. Try it out by writing on “I wish I could...”

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This book on "listening" to guidance while journal writing is an essential for anyone who follows Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way method. Told in a series of stories and interviews with friends, this book demonstrates how you can gain insight and answers to questions and dilemmas while making space for the divine on the pages of your journal.

I enjoyed this book. I had figured out years ago that many questions get answered and dilemmas solved while writing my Morning Pages, so this book was quite affirming. The book has helped me be more intentional about listening to divine guidance while journaling. Much appreciated!

It is like reading someone's daily journal. At Week 2 (approx p 47), I started just reading the week's subject matter, reading the side quotes, and reading the last page for the prompt. The book reminded me of how often morning pages have been of great benefit to me in life -- I could have just reviewed the Artists' Way. But I am glad I supported Ms. Cameron.

I can’t give the book itself a bad review because it’s Julia Cameron and how much more awesome can an author be? But this book arrived damaged, just wanted to provide that feedback.

I got such a lot out of The Artist’s Way and was excited to get this - I even pre-ordered it. But sadly, I hate the pious tone. She gives lengthy descriptions of her days and thought processes and interactions with her friends, who sound smug. On the upside: I’ve started doing the morning pages again.
