Aynsley Dunbar and George Duke on The Grand Wazoo
God damn. Can we talk about George Duke’s solo in “Eat That Question”? How the fuck are Dunbar and Duke so in sync? These motherfuckers were stars on these early 70s FZ records goddamn. 🙌🏽
They're a force of nature. One of the reasons the Grand Wazoo is my favorite Zappa album.
Amen brother. TGW is safe and cozy. Makes me feel like I’m watching Sesame Street or some shit.
If only Zappa would have just made like 10 more waka/jawakas and grand wazoos... I would literally be in heaven forever.
Studio tan and sleep dirt are still amazing but nothing quite comes close to wazoo/waka
Ohhh yes Waka. Needs to dig back into that.
I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority but Waka is my favorite
Wow. I respect this.
Yeah same I enjoy waka more. To me TGW is a big band record and waka is a jazz fusion record
Wakka is the best Zappa record. Anyone that disagrees is a fool.
How Could I Be Such A Fool?
That’s one of my favorite Zappa tunes. He doesn’t have many slow, sad songs (less than 1%) but this one is probably my favorite like it. I really love the cover Valerie as well.
The original of how could be such a fool is great but the version on crusin with Reuben and the jets is by far my favorite song on that album and goddam that baseline at the end is badass
🧐
I mean you could've had Läther instead of Studio and Sleep but Warner Bros went and fucked the pooch on that one.
Warner Bros sucks!
HOLY FUCK! Eat that question is my favorite! Between Duke and Zappa’s solos there is nothing better!
I mean. I think their respective solos on Inca Roads are both ... extraterrestrial ...
Yeah that is true!
couldnt agree more. i just came home from work and im playing like garbage. im gonna put this on and hopefully it will make me decent again.
I go to this album all the time. I can play it around Zuggles without judgement.
Who the fuck is Zuggles
Ya know, the non-Zapps? The Zuggleborn
Oh, ok. Thanks.
I love Aynsley and George. Aynsley was the reason Frank didn't need 2 drummers in the Flo and Eddie band. Aynsley was that fast. George Duke breathed life and soul into it. That being said, Eat That Question is such a good song and I love every part of those albums.
Aynsley seems to be able to keep a hi-hat/ride going at the same time as playing around the snare/toms, his fills are full of cymbals and not just the usual crashes. I find that's one of the reasons why he sounds like two drummers.
He also has the Elvin Jones circularity that make his grooves feel like somebody tripping and stumbling down a hill in the most graceful way.
Very well said. That’s wassup.
Aynsley! 🖤
