Unlike many celebrities, Nicolas Cage's storied relationship history isn't primarily spread through rumors and gossip mags. The actor has spoken openly about many of his famous loves and doomed marriages over the years. Cage is known for his passion and intensity as an actor, and this ferocity is just as evident in his romantic life. From his eccentric quest (literally) to win Patricia Arquette's affections to his whirlwind romance with Lisa Marie Presley, Cage isn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve.

Five marriages and even more relationships later, Cage has never stopped believing in the power of love. His romantic life isn't without drama, however. Who was he married to for a whopping four days? Who does he share son Kal-El with? And which lucky lady was proposed to over FaceTime? Whatever you think of Cage, you can't accuse him of being unenthusiastic about love…

  • Riko Shibata

How They Met: When Nic Cage visited his future gravesite - yes, you read that correctly - in 2020, he did so with a mysterious woman on his arm. According to Peoplethis woman's name is Riko Shibata, and a year later, the 27-year-old became the new Mrs. Cage. “We got engaged on FaceTime,” Cage revealed to his brother Marc Coppola on Q104.3 in 2020. A whirlwind Los Vegas wedding followed, but the whole love story started in Japan, where Cage and Shibata were first introduced by mutual friends. “I thought she was stunning when I met her,” Cage told Entertainment Tonight“She had two sugar gliders… I thought, ‘That's it. This, this could work out.’”

Current Relationship Status: The couple seem to be happily married as of 2024. In 2022, they celebrated an adorable new addition to the family: a daughter, August, named after Cage's late father.

  • Erika Koike

How They Met: Love was in the air in 2018 when Cage was spotted with makeup artist Erika Koike. And just like Cage throughout his long list of performances, the couple didn’t hesitate to go big: After a year of dating, they quietly married in Nevada. Despite their intensity, however, the romance didn’t last, and Cage filed for an annulment just four days after they tied the knot, according to E! News

Current Relationship Status: “There was a recent breakup,” Cage revealed to the New York Times Magazine in 2019. “I don’t really want to talk about it. I was pretty upset about that and the way things happened.”

  • Alice Kim

How They Met: It was 2004 when Cage first locked eyes on the woman who would become his third wife, Alice Kim. At the time, she was taking his sushi order. The couple got engaged after two months of dating. They allegedly got married so that Kim, who was born in Korea, could travel with Cage to South Africa. “You can connect the dots,” he told The Guardian“And we did it because we loved each other.” Cage described the marriage as being “a very clear decision to marry out of my own zip code… I married into another culture.” Cage and Kim may have been separated by age and culture, but they were brought together by a little baby boy, Kal-El. “Kal-El is a Hebrew name and it means voice of God. It's also from a very famous character,” Cage told fans for GQ (the fictional character in question is, of course, Superman).

Current Relationship Status: Sadly, the couple's wedded bliss wasn't to last. After 12 years of marriage, they filed for divorce. “She was quite young when I married her and I don't really have any ill will towards what happened. That's all I'll say,” Cage told The GuardianOn a happier note, Cage and Kim appear to be on good terms, and Kim even attended Cage's 2021 wedding to Riko Shibata.

  • How They Met: Cage remembers the very first time he locked eyes with Lisa Marie Presley. “I was thunderstruck… We got to talking, we got to know each other, and she’s hilarious and she’s a real firecracker and she tells it like it is.” The feeling was mutual, as Presley herself described to Playboy. “We clicked instantly… He and I detected some sort of rebellious spirit in each other.” Their relationship timeline allegedly raised a few eyebrows - “Nic was also ending a marriage to Patricia Arquette that wasn't in good shape,” Presley added - but the couple still got married in 2002. Their free-spirited natures led them down the aisle, but Cage filed for divorce months later. “We had a lot of laughs together,” Cage told The Guardian in 2013, over ten years since Cage and Presley broke up. “Much was made about it because of her father and whatnot, but we had a simple relationship in my opinion. That was a different time in my life. Many lifetimes ago.”

Current Relationship Status: When Presley died at 54 years old in 2023, Cage once again remembered the laughs they shared. “Lisa had the greatest laugh of anyone I ever met,” he told E! News“She lit up every room, and I am heartbroken.”

  • How They Met: Cage told Playboy that he fell in love with actress Patricia Arquette at first sight. “I met her at Canter's, a deli… I said, ‘I want to marry you.’ She said, ‘You're crazy,’ and she didn't believe me.” According to Cage, Arquette agreed to send him on a quest to obtain all kinds of bizarre items, such as a black orchid and J.D. Salinger's signature, among others. It was Cage's way of proving his love for the then-19-year-old actress.

He was halfway through the quest when things turned rocky between them, but years later, Arquette gave Cage a call. “I called him and said, ‘Okay, I'm ready to get married.’ I was 27,” she said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen

Current Relationship Status: In 2000, five years after they got married, Cage and Arquette both filed for divorce. It's unclear just how much time the couple spent together as a married couple, as Cage alleged that they only lived together for the first nine months of their marriage. Still, they were both in the 1999 film Bringing Out the Dead, so their split really must have been amicable, as alleged by both Arquette and Cage.

  • Kristen Zang

How They Met: Compared to Cage's other relationships, there's very little known about his time spent with Kristen Zang. We do know that they first got together in 1992, when Zang - an aspiring actress - was in her late teens, and Cage was in his late 20s. In typical over-the-top Nic Cage fashion, the actor proposed to Zang in the middle of Central Park, according to Complex. The couple's future was bright, and they even attended the Golden Globes together. Unfortunately, their engagement came to an abrupt end in 1994.

It's been rumored that Cage broke up with Zang so he could marry Patricia Arquette, but this has only been alleged. The actor, meanwhile, said he was heartbroken over the break-up. “The split-up was a difficult one; it had been a tumultuous relationship. But it was also a sweet relationship. We just weren’t right for each other,” he told Playboy

Current Relationship Status: Apparently, their age difference was part of the problem. “I had to get up early and she liked to sleep in like you do when you're 18. She wanted to go to nightclubs. So there was a sadness when we had to split up and that sadness went into the movie [Leaving Las Vegas]... A lot of the times when I was saying ‘I love you,’ I was just heartbroken,” Cage admitted in the same Playboy interview. He hasn't said much about Zang since.

  • Lisa Stothard

    Lisa Stothard

How They Met: It’s unclear how Cage and Stothard met, and the length of their alleged relationship is just as murky. After all, the early ‘90s was a busy time for Cage, professionally and romantically. What we do know is that Cage and Stothard loved to attend movie premieres hand-in-hand, such as the premiere of Cage’s 1990 film Wild at Heart. They also had a love of acting in common, as Stothard had earned a few small acting credits by the time she and Cage linked up in 1990.

Current Relationship Status: The couple are believed to have split around 1991, but again, very little is known about the extent of their relationship, then or now.

  • Christina Fulton

How They Met: It's possible that Cage and his girlfriend in 1988, actress Christina Fulton, never intended to stay in each other's lives for very long. But you know what they say about best laid plans and how, too often, they end up leaving you with a little baby boy. Yes, Cage and Fulton are parents to Weston Coppola Cage, who was born in 1990. Still, Cage and Fulton never married, and Cage was seen dating other people that same year.

Current Relationship Status: Co-parenting is tricky, but co-parenting in the limelight may be even harder, if a 2011 lawsuit filed against Cage by Fulton is any indication. Fulton accused Cage of inflicting “mental, physical, and emotional” abuse on herself and their son. She also accused him of kicking her out of her home.

  • How They Met: When you're young and successful in Hollywood, why wouldn't you want to play the field? This seems to be what Cage did in the late ‘80s, and his relationship with former actress Ami Dolenz was allegedly fun, flirty, and fast. Perhaps they bonded over being born into famous families? After all, Cage is a Coppola and Dolenz is the daughter of Micky Dolenz, who was in the Monkees.

Current Relationship Status: We don't know much about Cage and Dolenz's current relationship, but judging by their appearance together at the premiere of the 1988 film And God Created Woman, they had fun together back in the day.

  • How They Met: In the late ‘80s, Cage was just starting to rise the ranks of Hollywood stardom, much like another boundary-pushing performer. A young Brooke Shields accompanied Cage to the premiere of his film Moonstruck. At the time, their appearance together was the kind of thing tabloids could only dream - and speculate - about. Neither star has ever given much info about their rumored flirtation, so we may never know for sure if Cage and Shields were ever really an item.

Current Relationship Status: Cage and Shields went their separate ways years ago, and as of 2024, both are married to other people
