Really not that impressive altogether, but I cannot stress enough how superior this version of You Missed My Heart is to the studio original — which was still fine but I hate how its synth almost imitates the melody to Jingle Bells. But really, this live take is one of those rare moments of perfection, the guitar playing is simple but captivating, the intimate mumbling and crooning from Kozelek matches the song's tragic tone, and the venue's acoustics and natural reverb complements the isolated feelings of the song too, it's all like perfectly ideal to make this the best rendition of the song despite being totally spontaneous.

there's this one moment, during Glenn Tipton, where Mark breaks the lovely allure of the song and asks someone named Anthony to "get over there and guard that squeak", as a chair was shaking up against the rafters of the hall.

it's moments like that that make the live albums of Kozelek so beautiful and so fragile.

Ever since he started releasing his albums on his own Caldo Verde label, Mark Kozelek has been inundating us with live albums. At least two or three are released per year, some as regular releases, some as free giveaways for customers of his label's mail order service, and since Kozelek seems to have given up his electric guitar in favour of the nylon-stringed acoustic and has reduced his band Sun Kil Moon to just one musician (himself), one might question the intense release activity that provides us with numerous versions of his songs, which suffer a bit from sameyness due to the reduced arrangement.

Live at Phoenix Public House is a more recent release, consisting largely of songs from his latest Sun Kil Moon album Among the Leaves. That is the first good thing, because the album contains fairly strong material, and many the original versions do have at least a pared-down "band" feeling, so the solo acoustic treatments provide a new perspective on them.

The second good thing, however, that Kozelek seems to have been in a particularly good mood that evening. Compared to his somewhat stiff performance on his previous live album, he seems unusually relaxed and laid back here, really enjoying what he is doing, which is ironically at odds with some of his "I'm an ageing singer-songwriter who doesn't get chicks anymore" lyrics. The sound is also much better, using much less of the reverb effect that Kozelek seems to like so much on his voice, which helps establish a warmer atmosphere.

That said, it's strictly an album for Kozelek fans. If you don't like his voice, his drawn-out songs, or the solo acoustic line-up, then this won't be for you either. It already takes some knowledge of the man to like this album, and it's nowhere near as instantly winning as his Ghosts of the Great Highway. However, of the countless Kozelek live albums, this is surely one of the very best because for once it shows the man apparently having fun, and you wouldn't want to miss that.
