I have not seen the movie, but heard the soundtrack on the local classical music station and was especially taken by the track "Little Ducks". I listened to the rest of the music and decided to but the CD.

This is pretty amazing music. It starts out quiet, builds up, then quiets down again, but then builds up again and again to a thundering peak! This is a VERY dynamic recording and can go from low to moderate listening levels to very loud, powerful, thundering dynamics quickly at times. I have to be careful how I have the volume set when I start the CD. It's quiet and mostly calm at first, but it builds over time and reaches nearly movie theatre volume levels at the peaks.

The music has kind of a spooky and ominous undertone throughout much of the CD. Very introspective, and yet just when you've really wrapped up in the peaceful parts of the music, it suddenly just thunders and blasts you out of your listening chair!

Some have said it is kind of repetitious at times, but I prefer to think of it as themes that are referenced in various ways throughout the music. I don't find it repetitious at all, although I have heard soundtracks that are terribly so.

It seems very well-recorded and has tremendous dynamic range, plenty of detail in the music, powerful bass when called fot, and is very spacious sounding. Most music released these days is highly compressed and can be flat sounding, but not this. This is great listen to when you have the time to sit and listen to it from beginning to end. Listening to one track or another without the rest of the music just won't do it for me.

I'm a fan of movie soundtracks, and Hans Zimmer really delivers in the soundtrack to Crimson Tide. It punctuates the tensions aboard the USS Alabama as the crews struggle to decide whether to launch their nukes during the latter years of the Cold War. It also helps with the tension of the movie between the "Old Navy" and the "New Navy" way of doing things between Captain Ramsey and Lt. Hunter and the mutiny that happens aboard the ship during the crisis.

My only problem is that the quality of the MP3 version on Amazon is not the best. There is a subtle "wobble" you can hear throughout the entire recording, especially when you listen to the third track, Little Ducks. If this can get fixed, I'd give this product at least 4 stars.

IMHO, this is probably the best musical score by HZ, ever. The music is exciting, beautiful, and powerful - definitely HZ at his best! At certain times, the music is soft or calming, and at other times it is appropriately loud and bold, ups and downs, just an ingenious mix of music at the correct times, and if you've seen the movie, you can almost visualize the scenes that go along with the music! As I've said, probably HZ's best piece of music, ever!
