The first time I was in Dresden, some years after Die Wende, they were working on the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche, badly damaged during the February 1945 bombing raid and subsequently razed. Now it is back to its old glory. Well worth a visit even if you're not religious.

The Zwinger of Dresden - a palace and garden complex - ordered by Augustus II "the Strong" - Elector of Saxony and King of Poland ordered the building of this complex inspired by Versailles palaces of the French kings - that was in the early 1700's. Although it is not as big as Versailles it is still a baroque masterpiece - beautifully decorated - with its themed pavilions that nowadays are home to divers expositions, like the Dresden Porcelain Collection, the Old Masters Picture Gallery the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments, etc ... all these are opened to the public to visit.
Now visiting all the pavilions will take several hours of your time - I did not have those several hours during this visit - so just took a tour of the promises - stopped for some pics at the "Nymphenbad" - particularly interesting.
Important to know - during the useless carpet bombing of 13-14th of February 1945 the Zwinger suffered extensive damage and the reconstruction took more than a decade, but today it is as beautiful as it was imagined , well almost - minus the huge construction site in the middle.
Now the central garden with the fountains is under construction so las December it was a huge construction site - off limits for visiting.
Overall a beautiful place to visit and together with the Frauenkirche a symbol of Dresden and a definite must see when in Dresden.

The Green Vault is unique--so many unusual treasures in a treasure of a place--all ornate and over the top in a town where the architecture is also already over the top iThe audio guide is terrific and tells a story of a life most of us cannot even begin to imagine. My question--which no one could answer-was who polishes all that silver?!
You need to book ahead to visit the vault but it is well worth the advance planning.

On 2 floors you get to see a big collection of various artists and their work, mostly paintings with a few statues as well.
The size is actually manageable in 1 visit though it is surely a lot to take in.

"Furstenzug" or if you like "Procession of Princes" that can be seen in Dresden depicts the Wettin dynasty , Saxony's ruling family with the dukes, electors, margraves and kings , over time, for 800 years.
This artwork was commissioned to celebrate the 800 years of the Wettin Dynasty and was originally a painting on the outside wall of the Stallhof( the Stables Courtyard) part of the castle of Dresden.
Now obviously if it would have remained a painting most likely it would have deteriorated over time but between 1904 and 1907 the painting was replaced with 23000 pieces of Meissen porcelain tiles spanning on more than 100 meters of wall , thus making it the largest porcelain artwork in the world to date. (interesting fact, the artwork survived the firestorm resulting from the bombing of Dresden in February 13-14 1945 , with minimal damage).
So when in Dresden , and if you are interested in history or you just like art this is one of the landmarks that you shall put high on your to do list.

Eating my lunch facing the Semperoper, I admired its splendid appearance and thought back to operas I have enjoyed attending there, most notably a spirited Falstaff and a quirky but well-sung Rosenkavalier. The acoustics are great. If you're an opera lover, and perhaps even if you're not, you should teat yourself to a performance in this great house.

The amount of trove here is incredible. Easily takes four hours to view the items, the craft is superb
Best go first thing as yours begin to arrive at 11:00 and it gets seriously crowded. Well laid out in a modern museum. Gift shop not up to much. You have to put your jackets and bags in lockers on arrival before security.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Puts the old town in perspective. Can't imagine what kind of camera could take pictures that could be projected onto a 50 foot high screen.

We visited on the first warm day of sping and enjoyed every bit of the day. The gardens are beautiful even in March and the park offers many places to escape the busy town.

The Albertinum takes over where the Zwinger leaves off, taking the viewer through Romanticism and Impressionism into the 20th century. Some of the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich are on loan to exhibitions in Hamburg and Berlin marking the 250th anniversary of the artist's birth, but one of my favourite works by him, Das Grosse Gehege bei Dresden, is on view. The works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are particularly good, especially Otto Dix's powerful indictment of war.
