The monument commemorates the decisive battle against Napoleon in October 1813, which was fought in the fields around Leipzig.

Probably Leipzig's best-known landmark commemorates the historic Battle of the Nations against Napoleon in autumn 1813, which was fought in the fields around Leipzig. With about half a million soldiers and more than 110,000 dead, the event became the biggest battle of the 19th century.

Built on 18 October 1913 in the middle of the former battlefield, it was inaugurated in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives in the course of the battle. In front of the monument is the "Lake of Tears", a large reflection pool, which is also supposed to remind us of it. The monument is not only impressive because of its appearance, but also because of the 364 steps leading up to the viewing platform, which offers you a phenomenal panoramic view over Leipzig and the surrounding area at a height of 91 metres.

Throughout the year there are also guided tours, choir concerts, open-air events, educational museum offers and special exhibitions. The FORUM 1813 museum integrated into the monument complex also offers spectacular insights into the events of the liberation wars and the Battle of the Nations.
