From a fellow Italian I’m not a big fan of going out to Italian Restaurants for dinner. My mom cooked the best Italian food and I’m not bad either. But upon several recommendations I decided to try this establishment. As soon as I walked in...the aromas captured my head and soul. The fact that it was the first movie theaters in Ann Arbor and then converted it to fine dining I felt at home. There’s a beautiful Italian mural on the wall where many people watched many movies. Now for dinner I was great by Charlotte with a big smile behind her mask. She made some recommendations which I asked her to. I chose her favorite eggplant Parmesan with Spaghetti. I added a wonderful pear Gorgonzola walnut salad and a glass of red Italian wine. After ordering my meal Charlotte brought me the best homemade bread with olive oil, Parmesan cheese and black pepper. Wow wow wow is all I can say about the bread and dipping oil. So fresh and tasty. Shortly after my eggplant Parmesan and spaghetti came out. I asked for al dente pasta and it was cooked perfectly and the gravy was so flavorful and had lots of fresh diced tomatoes in it. The eggplant was cooked perfectly with lots of fresh mozzarella and gravy with it. The portion size was large and I ate the whole plate. Only regret was that I didn’t save room for dessert. Ask for Charlotte she’ll take really good care of you. Hope I’m traveling to Ann Arbor so I can visit this fine restaurant again.More

Sunday early afternoon we stopped in as an alternative to a closed restaurant. It was a delight, quiet so we could hear ourselves, service was perfect. Only caveat, their espresso machine wasn't working. Enjoyed the Di pere salad, minestrone soup and Bolognese - which is...hearty like stroganoff. Yum!More

I've dined at Gratzi several times and held a few celebratory dinners there over the past few years. My most recent visit was "just average." The menu has been tweaked in some surprising ways. The pricing scheme, in particular, is curious. Hot and cold appetizer...prices are pretty high for the quality and quantity of the food. Most eyebrow-raising is the "grilled tuscan bread for $12! While it comes with olive oil, some tapenade and roasted garlic...it is Tuscan bread...simplly grilled. For a party of 10, $24 for two orders of bread seems pretty outrageous. Most Italian restaurants provide bread gratis. When I'm ordering wine and appetizers and a $39 a la carte steak, I think bread ought to be provided free. It's the little things that are telling. Pasta dishes, on the other hand, are reasonably priced and tasty. Salads are on the expensive side, but tasty and definitely shareable. One dish that was disappointing was chicken cacciatore...it was a baked chicken with about 2 Tbsp of sauce. That's not classic cacciatore...more sauce helped an otherwise uninteresting and plain dish. The veal and salmon were tasty. Service was average. With 18% added on to both food and wine, I expect really good service--someone attentive to guests' wine glasses, plates cleared timely, other beverages refilled without asking. It boils down to training. When one is walking to the restroom, the staff should move aside when approaching a patron, not expect them to squeeze by. Again, the little things are telling. After one lackluster entree, knowing that an event was celebrated, wouldn't you bring over a cannoli or a brownie with a candle in it as a nice gesture? Why inquire what one is celebrating if you have no plans to acknowledge it materially?! Again, the little things that are not costly and make a nice impression. I think that I will celebrate elsewhere going forward and hope that Gratzi returns to a previous high mark.;More

This used to be one of the best restaurants in Ann Arbor: consistently good service and good quality food. This last visit was disappointing from the food perspective. The Minestrone was extremely salty..to the extent that it wasn’t edible. I had a pizzeta that didn’t...taste like much: I truly felt I could have done it better myself. And the Rissotto a la Mare had too much red pepper. Interestingly, one of the waiters came to apologize and said he had tried the risotto during lunch and felt it was too spicy too..but didn’t tell the cook. Go figure. Service continues to be good. But unfortunately that’s not good enough to attract people to a restaurant, particularly considering that Ann Arbor has so many good options. Not coming back any time soon.More

I often eat at Gratzi and we invite out of town guests. The decor is very appealing, service is top notch, the food is consistently of high quality. Entries are all good. Most often I have steak, which is very nice (while it comes with...goat cheese, some of our guests substitute it for other cheese). Desserts are very good, tiramisu is superb.More

I can't believe this place is rated so low on TripAdvisor! This is one of my favorite Ann Arbor restaurants! The atmosphere is elegant, but not to the point where it is snobbish. The food is great and service is one of the best in...town. Every time we have guests from out of town - we take them here and they always love it. Don't forget to try the downstairs cigar and dessert bar below the Gratzi/Chop House- a good way to end a great meal.More

I've always liked this restaurant. It's earned a reputation over the years as a reliable, solid choice on the competitive Main Street scene. My last two visits however, have been underwhelming to say the least. I'll only focus on the most recent visit in this...review. The service was not the worst part of the evening. It was average-- we had to remind the server of drink orders she forgot, and she was absent for long periods of time even though it was a very slow night. The food took 45 minutes to come, which was strange again given that there were only 6-8 other seated parties at the time. Starting off with my starter salad, let's just say that for $8, you should get more than some mixed greens and a tomato wedge. My Branzino main course was pretty awful I have to say, though I hate to say it. First, it was almost to salty to eat. Second, it was sitting in a pool of greasy "sauce". Third it was smothered in a tomato sauce topping that pretty much dominated the fish. The roasted potatoes would have been nice, but since they were swimming in the pool of grease they were not edible. That was my dinner. I looked over at my friend's Veal Scallopine. I seriously could not see the veal pieces. The couldn't have been 3 ounces of meat there which, for $35, I would say he didn't get a very good value. My other friend across the table said her scallops were dry and overcooked. My wife was pretty non committal about her egvlant dish. I'm sorry I have to review this so poorly but that's the truth. I really have liked Gratzi in the past but now, given the prices there and the past two visits, I really wouldn't rush back in.More

I just read the last review and wish I had before we dined here. I feel the exact same way on all points they talked about. We spent about $50 per person on one drink an entree and bread...which I would not mind if I...really loved the food but that was not the case. I ordered salmon which was ok but the garlic sauce was very salty and my siblings felt the lamb chops were fatty and the chicken in the penne was not good at all. So we left feeling that we would not go back. I will say the staff was very friendly and accommodating with our table request.More

Disappointed with the new menu at Gratzi. Had dinner on the patio which is nice. Server explained the new menu had been in place just a couple of weeks. Gone is their wonderful fresh bread and olive oil, replaced by skinny breadsticks. We ordered a...grilled bread appetizer but weren't too happy about having to do that. The new menu has more "small plates" and less entrees. Gone were some of our favorite entrees. Salads were good but full size only, no side salad with entree or smaller salad available. Feels like a way to jack up the bill. Entrees were ok, but I doubt we will be quick to return, would rather eat across the street at Palio who still serve their fresh bread and olive oil and offer a smaller salad with entree.More

Celebrated a birthday at Gratzi. Service was excellent. Terrific special lemon sole with sautéed spinach and fingerling potatoes. My wife had shrimp farfalle. Equally delicious. The Cesar salad was just perfect. I would return just for that salad. The birthday discount and complimentary cannoli offered...here made this a steal! Bravo!More

I don't know of anyone who lives in A2 who actually eats @ Gratzi. The people who seem to love it visit here from other places and don't realize there are other places to eat. My mother-in-law wanted to try Gratzi last weekend (she worked...at a high-end restaurant in Detroit for 25 years), because her cousin from Northern Michigan raved about it. She wasn't impressed. My soup was lukewarm. Her Caesar salad was not prepared well. The chef placed full pieces of romaine lettuce on a plate and put a scant amount of dressing on top. No anchovies either, like she expected of Caesar in a nicer restaurant. The explanation for the salad was "the chef thought the presentation was nice." My step-daughter (who worked at another Main Street Venture restaurant) wanted to try Gratzi last year. She wasn't impressed with the quality of her meal for the price charged. At that meal, my mussels did not taste fresh. For a more consistent and stress-free meal, I take out-of-town guests to The Earle, on Washington St. I have also taken clients to Amadeus, where I've always had great food. Prickly Pear is far more casual than Gratzi, but the food has always been fresh. Never had a problem at Pacific Rim either. Gratzi is part of Main Street Ventures, who owns Real Seafood and Palio (across the street from Gratzi). Palio isn't that impressive. Of the other restaurants that Main St. Ventures owns, I would recommend either Real Seafood, or Carson's (out on Plymouth Rd.)More

I have eaten here for dinner over thirty times. It is a really great place to have a lunch on the sidewalk. Unfortunately, they have redone the menu recently taking away some of my favorites, but the butternut squash ravioli are still there and the...veal is quite good. It is located in an old theatre which gives it some nice charm. Food quality wise, it is the 2nd best in ann arbor (bella caio is better) and it is a lively restaurant so good for large parties or graduation celebrations. Some nights there are very long waits to be seated. The wait staff are not well trained, but seem to think that they are. My biggest gripe, however, is the VERY overpriced wine list. All of the restaurants in this group (the horrendous Palio's, the mediocre Real Seafood and the high end Chophouse) share this very annoying trait. Therefore, I never really enjoy my meal because I am either drinking a badly overpriced bottle or have settled for a single glass with the promise I will take something out when I get home that will be one quarter the price and five times as good. If you go to Bella Caio or the Earle you can pay a lot for wine, but it will be excellent. Sadly, not this is not true here. Go next door and have dessert in La Dolce Vita (also part of this restaurant group) which is very cozy. I would rate this in the top 10 Ann Arbor restaurants on the lower end of that list.More

Gratzi used to be one of my favorite go to places. Everything I loved they’ve removed from the menu. The one thing they haven’t removed that’s been so good was the salmon gnocchi. I just recently had it and the gnocchi was very poor quality....I don’t know what’s happened to this restaurant but it is declining fast. I think my last visit was my last visit!More
