With more nights inside coming up as fall approaches, upgrading your TV stand is a smart investment, whether you plan on hosting movie nights and football Sundays or you just want to have a peaceful weekend of binge watching on your own. A good TV stand works as the centerpiece to your entertainment room and not only elevates your TV, but draws focus to it (or away from it, as you see fit).
Many TV stands serve as storage for other entertainment system accoutrements, like game consoles or sound bars, as well as great accent pieces in a living room or den. There are plenty of attractive media consoles on the market to snag for an average of roughly $300, which is a steal compared to the cost of your new TV. Plus, with a little extra space for storage, you can open up the space for a bigger sound system.

What to Consider
Size and Shape
If you already have a TV or plan to buy a new one, you’ll need to find a stand with the right dimensions. Many large TVs are designed with feet on the corners instead of a central stand, meaning you need a TV console long enough to hold it comfortably. The width of your TV stand can play a major factor if you plan on adding a sound bar along the bottom of the TV.
In addition to length and width, pay extra attention to height to ensure your TV will be at the appropriate spot for ergonomic viewing—just above eye level when you’re sitting on your couch. Small TVs will need a higher stand to meet your eye level, or maybe even a wall mount.
Consoles are generally built to hold TVs 40 inches or less, all the way up to 80-inch sets. Most are rectangular or square, but there are also corner TV stands, which can work well in rooms without a ton of wall space, plus there are floating consoles that are great space-savers.
Weight Capacity
Most TV stands have a weight capacity between 75 and 250 pounds. Most TVs (greatly depending on size) weigh somewhere between 25 and 50 pounds, so this will be sufficient if you use the stand for your TV and even a few additional speakers. If the TV stand is designed as a piece of furniture with additional space for books, vinyl records, or gaming consoles, make sure to choose an option with a higher total weight capacity.
Style and Storage
TV stands can be as integral to the vibe and style of the room as any other piece or furniture, even though they’re practical, too. While it’s easy to choose based on function alone, there are TV stands in nearly every style imaginable. You’ll see rustic farmhouse pieces next to mid-century stands and everything in between, with multiple options in each style.
Most TV stands also come with some storage space for other entertainment devices and equipment. Stands with large, wide shelves can hold gaming consoles, speakers, Blu-Ray collections, and more with relative ease, making them better for home theaters and entertainment rooms. Stands without this storage space tend to have a more minimalist profile and fit in to rooms that don’t need crowded shelves or cluttered surfaces.
How We Selected
We made our selections based on a few baseline qualities including a solid weight capacity, a wide based to fit a range of TVs, and modern styles made with good materials. We recommend TV stands that span multiple price points, ranging from about $90 to upwards of $600, and aimed to find options that’ll blend in as well as those that’ll become the focal point of your room. Many of the stands we review come in several different sizes and finishes, and we noted additional options for every console we cover.
